2 weeks now before we will be in Addo again with 14 school kids... still no news about possible lion cubs or latest lion movements?

Will be the 4th visit -- last 3 delivered no lions, but they still enjoyed the visit any way.
Maybe this will be our lucky 3 days in Addo!

God bless,

Leaving tomorrow for Addo... heavy rain predicted for most of the week. Arrive there on Fri and leave on Mon, with sunshine and rain predicted...
Any news of animal movements, hyena dens, lion cubs, meerkat families?
Suspect elephants will not need much water if it rains the whole week...
Hope the school kids have a very special time!
God bless,

Please let us know if you see any Lion or Hyena and where. I might be going to Addo on Sunday for the day.

We took a day trip to the park on Saturday 26th and found Gina & Josie in the afternoon

Here's some video of them. As they moved south, Gina spotted a warthog moving down a hill towards them and so she went into hunting mode. Fortunately for the warthog, Josie made a bit of a mess of the hunt and it escaped very easily.

I have not followed this thread, but just a quick question (which probably have been answered before....): how many lions are currently in Addo? Which areas do they frequent most?

I didn't see any lion on Sunday or Monday.... But did spot caracals on both days. I've seen 2 male lions at the Domkrag Dam area in December 2013 near the Main Camp. Another 2 male lions at the Addo/Paterson road crossing in October 2013 and in 2011 I saw 2 males and a female on the Mbotyi Loop near Camp Matyholweni.

I think there are 9 lions in total?

Hi Eddie,

Have a look here

FrontierPR wrote:My apologies all. The numbers I quoted were for those spotted during the census. The full figures are: Addo has 9 lion in main camp. This amount is based on available prey and size of territories. Two females are not on contraception.

The images are cracking - pin sharp.
Well done.
Addo really is a wonderful park IMHO better than Kruger in lots of ways.
Perhaps another visit next year
2015 - Jun/Jul - Scotland
2015 - Sep - North Wales
2016 - South Africa/USA/Canada?

Hi everyone,

Just returned from 3 days in Addo after the heavy rains...

Addo can not really be compared to Kruger.

Kruger gives much wilder feel, more big predators and less signs of human intervention...

But, Addo is more concentrated and on the right day you see far more than in Kruger in a very small space...

After the rains the elephants were of course nowhere to be seen as it was very cold too. They made a very good appearance on the Gorah loop on Saturday pm, and we had some spectacular interactions with them in the little valley en route to Carol's Rest when a breeding herd of about 50 came down the bank and surrounded our school bus... twice had an ele within half a meter of our open window, and we could not move because of traffic -- you will NEVER experience this in Kruger and come out unscathed!

Saw 3 caracals in 2 days -- have never seen 1 caracal in Kruger in at least 20 visits!

Saw 1 limping male lion (there were 2, but one sleeping) in Wayne's Valley -- my first lion sighting in the last 5 visits to Addo -- you will never have such a low success rate in Kruger!
Problem is most lions like the south, and if you sleep in the north, you only get to Matyholweni quite late, and have to leave early...
plus they were on contraceptives so long they've forgotten how to multiply!

Addo is special and unique, but not Kruger, Kalahari or Hwange.

Lovely and green after the rain!
God bless
Friedrich von Hörsten

Ps. Thank you to Honourary Warden Colin Lovemore for sending me an SMS so I could at last see a lion in Addo again!
