Thanx for the info.

Btw is there a resource online somewhere that has a full list of all Addo elies?
Maybe it would be a nice idea to start something like that.

ADDO on Ekonet on Kyknet - Ellies moved?

Unread postby AntonA » Wed Sep 09, 2009 7:59 pm

Hi, I just saw the last minute of Ekonet and the Ranger said that in September the Ellies was sucsesfully moved over the tare road.

What does this mean. Where are the Ellies now. I will be there in two weeks and would like to go and look for them on the other side of the tare road.

dankie

No. She is still alive. Afslurpie is the second oldest elephant cow in the Park at 60 years old.

Hi AntonA,

I did not see the Ekonet programme you mentoned so I'm not aware of what was said but we have not moved elephants anywhere recently.

The only time when we did move elephants across a tar road was in May 2003 when we moved a family group from Addo main camp into Nyathi area.

Don't worry, there are over 400 elephants in the main game area for you to spot

According to "A field guide to the Addo elephants" by Anna Whiiehouse and Pat Irwin - 2002:

"Since Patricia's death in 1997, Afslurpie has clearly emerged as the group's (The P Family) new matriarch."

"AFSLURPIE - Female Born 1949 Mother: Patricia
in Afrikaans this cow's name means 'off-trunk'. She lost the tip at the age of five, when the park's elephant-proof fence was constructed - it is probable that the accident happened when she was investigating the new fence. Afslurpie also has a crumpled left ear, which is probably due to cartilage damage."

Thanks for the info Apple.

Now a question! Does the matriarch of a group remain so until she dies or is there a "passing on of the baton" so to speak?

As far as I know the baton is only passed once the Matriarch dies.

Unread postby brummygal » Sat Sep 19, 2009 7:37 pm

Yes it me again - I think the elephant I am searching for is Skukuza. I have a brilliant photo but I am not sure how to post pics on here.

I hope that someone can help me.
