Addo: Spekboom Tented Camp

Unread postby BarkingMad » Wed Dec 08, 2010 4:29 pm

We have been watching this camp in the making for some time and I was happy to be the very first person to book there last Friday :) . We are eagerly looking forward to spending the night at Spekboom on the 18th. We had a look around there on Fridayand it looks very nice now that its done.... but I didn't take any photo's. ... the only pics I have were taken when it was still in the making. I think it will be very popular.

This new site could be turned into a great camping area, no electricity it will be like old times in the bush. I am sure the new tented site will be very popular and I am looking forward to staying there next year after the school holidays when it is not so crowded in the park.

Hi Bush Baptist

I peeped in there mid November after the caretaker at the new picnic site started bragging to me about the `new camp' -- I took a few pics at the time of 1 tent that was up, but did not post them on the net as this was obviously not official yet -- a brilliant plan to give Spekboom hide a new lease on life since the toilets etc. had disintegrated quite badly before the new picnic site was built.

The tents are much smaller than the current safari tents in the main camp, but you are absolutely in the bush on your own!

NB There is NO view of the waterhole from your stoep at all, since you sit in the middle of the thick spekboom forest. You follow a short path to the usual benches and viewing area used by all the day visitors.

Another excellent move by Sanparks in Addo!

Thanks to all, now just waiting for the camping site in Matyholweni, which has become an excellent game viewing area already, although I did not see any breeding herds of elephants there yet.

Can't wait to sleep over there with my wife one night....

God bless for 2011

We stayed at tent no 5 which is the best one because of it's location next to the fence and the waterhole. The animals are very close and we heard Lion, Jackal, Hayena, various birds etc while relaxing and watching the stars.
The shower is a gas type and coming from a farm I am used to listen for the "whoop" when you open the cold water to big and the pressure drop cause the flame to go out. So, be sensitive and treat the warm and cold water adjustment like a lady! The fridge is big enough to store all the stuff for the 5 tents.
A week-end at Spekboom is worth while and you feel as if you had a week's holiday.

Remember to take a torch for your scentic walk to the ablutions at night......one never know who or what is waiting for yooooooouuuuuu......Jokes aside...go and have fun...it's awesome!

@ Katenda
No 5 booked and paid for, for the 30 April. Can't wait! Also grew up on a farm, so the gas shower will bring back many happy memories.

You are going to love your stay at Spekboom... It is Addo Park's best kept secret. I punctured my mattress on day 2 of my usual 3 day visit and changed to Spekboom Tent 5. What an upgrade...

The jackals were great and it sounded as thou they were just beyond the light of my fire. Pack a good torch or headlight as the natural pathways are a maze at night.

I've read that at Spekboom there's 5 tents ,ablution and a kitchen.Does any of the Park's staff stay there at night? Just thought if you have all the aroma of braaivleis, won't the cats come and pay a visit while we all sleeping at night.

Hi ototw,
The Spekboom hide and tents are enclosed with electrified fencing so you will not need to worry about the larger wildlife entering the area.
The tents are cleaned each day by a staff member but there is no staff member resident in the camp at night.
Contrary to popular opinion, predators are not attracted to the smells of cooked meat as humans are  they prefer the rarer kind

I am looking forward to SO retiring because then we'll be able to spend more time in all the Sanparks camps.
I enjoy the forums and love it when gurus comment.
I'm relieved predators are not supposed to be attracted by braai smells but in my limited experience of Kruger, Imfolozi, Mana pools and Moremi, braaing lamb chops results in hyenas surrounding us!
