Addo: weather

Unread postby YNWA73 » Tue Dec 01, 2009 5:55 am

Hi,

I am planning on visiting Addo Elephant National Park in June, I was hoping to use a 4WD with a roof-top tent, will this be suitable, or is the weather too cold / wet for camping at this time of year?

Any other tips appreciaed, I am a first-timer (in fact this will be my first trip to Africa!).

Hi YNWA73!

June is heading more into our winter here and the weather can vary a lot. Over winter we generally have cold fronts that come in from the Cape Town direction every month or so. It can be lovely weather in between, but quite cold and miserable in the middle of a cold front! Are you going to be visiting in early or late June?

As for 4WD... the higher vehicle position is certainly an advantage over a sedan car for spotting animals, but 4WD certainly isn't necessary for getting around the park as the roads are very good.

Thanks for your prompt reply.

We will most probably be arriving in early to mid June, I guess we just have to keep our fingers crossed that the weather is kind to us.

I like the fact that the 4WD will give us more elevation for game viewing, even if we don't need it to get around.

It can be cold during the night. Why not book the Safari tents to stay in? You will still have the " bush" feeling, but it will help if the weathers not that good !

Where are you from YNWA73? Because what South Africans call cold is not considered cold by many countries. Cold in Addo is probably about 4degrees C.

shouldn't it be 14 degrees? Because 4 degrees is cold to any one (apart from eskimos) and to South Africans it mus feel like living in the freezer compartment of the fridge

June - a good time to visit Addo and MZ?

Unread postby mariek » Fri Mar 29, 2013 7:28 pm

Hi all,

My SO and I are considering whether to visit MZ and Addo in June this year - likely mid June. We've never been before and I was wondering what the climate, vegetation and wildlife are like at that time of the year? Any thoughts and comment are hugely appreciated.

All the best :D

Marie

Addo has a very moderate winter climate. Personally I would much rather visit Addo in winter than in the peak of summer.

MZ can get very cold in June - especially at night. But it makes up with nice sunny days.

Game viewing in both parks are normally very good in June.

Good morning all.

We have booked into Addo Camp from 26 to 28 April 2014.

What is the weather like at this time of the year?

Late April should still be nice enough weather, but getting cooler at night. There's always a possibility of an early cold front coming through with wind/rain, but personally I like that time of the year in the park
