Could anyone please update me on sunset/night drives and walks available at Twee Rivieren during October.
Any idea of scheduled times and costs.

Hi Mistral,

The Kgalagadi Tariff List are here, have a look at the bottom for tariffs on walks and drives.

Walks - We booked last time - unfortunately the ranger who was part of the team was away and the walks were cancelled. Evidently 2 rangers are required. This was a big disappointment. We are going to try again in October. Any idea what time the walks are scheduled for?

About an hour before sunrise.

You drive to Samevlooieing and start walking from there.

The guides are 'First & second rifle'.

First rifle leads the walk and second rifle walks immediately behind him/her. This is in (the extremely rare) case that shooting has to be done. If the second rifle brought up the rear, he/she might have to shoot 'through' the guests. We are told that danger almost always comes from the front. E.g. you suddenly come across something that gets surprised and aggressive.

First rifle explains things along the walk, and while he is doing so, second rifle stands a little way off and scours the area for anything interesting or dangerous.

I have done 4 walks altogether and always felt safe.

Good to learn more about the environment by walking.
Thanks again for the info.

During December I did a walk with the Bushmen in the park.
You book it directly with them at the bushman council office just down the road in Welkom and depending on your vehicle they can either pick you up at Twee Rivieren or you can meet them at their gate into the park.
You then drive out into the dunes for about 10minutes and do a walk for 2-3 hours.

Since it is a dune walk the probabilities of seeing large numbers of animals are low, but what you do get is a lesson in tracking and interpreting the environment. You will also learn about plants and other things important to the bushmen.

The highlight of our walk was finding pangolin spoor that was a day old :wall:

They take no weapons on these walks and reply only on knowledge

Never knew about the bushmen walks!

Good info - thank you.

So they have their own gate into the Park??

Do they still hunt in the Park as is permitted?

They have a community gate that is about 10km along the southern fence. You turn left right before reaching the parks reception (as you approach) and drive down the road. It's pretty sandy and bump!

I know they are allowed to hunt on their land in the park but I think there are restrictions when they approach the Aoub river. However I have no idea if they do still actively hunt....something that you could ask them directly.

They do harvest medicinal plants and collect objects for their crafts (porcupine quills, ostrich eggs etc) and might well do this on a walk.
