So after making all our plans for KNP December 2014, my husband pipes up last night saying why don't we rather go to KTP?????

So now I need a lot of advise from the KTP clans as I have never been there.
We will be going with a 2x4 bakkie and a caravan in tow.

Time will probably be the same, 12 nights.......

HELP!

Hi Magriet,

Have a look here............ Kgalagadi FAQ

And

Kgalagadi- Questions and Answers

I'm going to move your topic to the Arid park section, where you'll quickly get lots and lots of advice.......

What I can tell you is that some of the camps get booked quickly for December (and now I'm not even talking about the wilderness camps!!) so it is important to try and book as early as possible.

Good choice Magriet.

If you 'buy' all the hype that is given to you now, you might consider starting & ending at 2R and leaving the caravan there, (or 12 nights at 2R) as the internal roads are not suitable for caravans, and booking other camps in the middle.

Don't let that put you off. KTP is 800 km closer than Kruger to you will save that fuel.

I am planning to be there in December also. There are a lot worse places to be, and there are not the crowds & day visitors of Kruger.

Go for it. It could change your lives forever......

Some might say ( and I'm one of those) that it's not such a good idea to tow that caravan any further than Twee Riviere. Is this a standard Road caravan or is it a bush caravan?? The biggest problem is with the corrugated roads the normal road caravans do take a lot of punishment!!

12 Nights is a nice long stay so you can plan to see the whole park. Try and get a few more nights in Nossob than what you'll be spending in MM. At Nossob you could travel north and south so more roads to travel there.

If you do want to try and book Grootkolk or Garagab you can arrange to leave the caravan in Nossob and collect it again on your way south.

Thanks BB and LQ

It is a normal road caravan.
So if I look at the map, is the normal "Main park roads" also gravel and that's why its not a good idea to go any further?

All roads are gravel, except for the Bitterpan and Garagab roads that are 4X4 roads.

There are "patches" in the gravel roads that tend to be very sandy. So it's not always a hard surface you're traveling on!!

Magriet,

It's an awesome park and as it's on "my doorstep" we try and visit as often as possible. It changes your soul!!

So do keep it on that "to do" list!!

Hey Magriet, no cold feet. :naughty:

The area around 2R often 'cooks' and you can get to Nossob or MM easily on a day trip.

We often see lions or cheetahs - and what specimens- in the first 5 km from the gate.

At a busy leopard sighting the traffic jam is not more than 8 cars. Think of Kruger where you might not even see the leopard.

There is no 'bush' so you can see for miles.

A lot of people I know ( myself included) have seen a cheetah kill there because of the visibility.

C'mon, give it shot.

.......nope and BB have tried to locate those brownies every trip to KNP!!!

What I did not say was that we were a full three cars at that sighting!! We left just after gate opening and were joined a few moments later by those two cars and that was "it" till we drove on.

It's very seldom that there are more than a few cars at a sighting and usually they are very well behaved.
