What I have read about Urikaruus is that the accommodation units are uncomfortably hot in summer and cold in winter. What will they be like during October?

@Elmar.
October tends to be fairly mild without any of the real extremes.
Days can be hot but because the units are in the riverbed and not constructed of bricks and mortar they tend to heat up and cool down fairly quickly.
Nights will be become pleasantly cool the later it gets.

Given the choice I would take the hottest day or the coldest night at Urikaruus and swop it for any day of the year anywhere else on earth. :lol:

Thanks Enrico. Well said! Now the only difficulty is to find availability.

Another problem with the Wilderness camps is that bookings are not only for couples but families or a group of friends may book. A small family will take 50 % of the accommodation and any more will be 75 - 100 % to one party. Therefore it can easily be that in 1 month time there will only be 10 - 20 reservations only for the 4 units over 30 days if each booking is for 3 days only.

If I want bookings at Urikaruus I need to book 2 cabins for the 3 of us. So this makes it even more difficult to get a place. Only camps that are available most of the time are KTC and Gharagab and if lucky Kieliekrankie, Bitterpan and Grootkolk.

How often does it happen that units are not fully utilize considering that single persons and families of 3/5 book. We should start a share a Urikaruus cabin thread. :roll: :lol: :lol: :lol:

We're going to be staying at Urikaruus in July next year - I'm very excited but have heard it can get pretty cold at night. We will be bringing some thermals and fleeces & coats so that we can sit out in the evenings & go on night drives etc at other camps but I am wondering particularly for Uri if anyone has advice on how to keep warm at night/ in bed! Bearing in mind everything we bring will either have to be brought on a plane or bought in Upington! I know it's not for a while but there's lots of planning & organising to be done plus I'm hoping people who have been recently might be able to comment while their experience is fresh in their memories - though of course help is welcomed from anyone and everyone!
Thanks,
Mez

Hi Mez

We were in KTP earlier this month. Some nights were OK, but towards the en of our stay - night time temps dropped to well below 0C. The wilderness camps can be quite cold at night.

We had thermals and a hot water bottle and they worked a treat. I also took an extra blanket (can be bought cheaply at somewhere like PEP).

Thanks jenand! I'm used to the cold but when it's cold I'm used to being able to retreat to an insulated and heated house at night!

M&S are doing half price silk thermals at the moment, should you wish to stock up :wink: :lol:
Want to say Thank You or Well Done to a fellow 'mite? Why not nominate them for a Kudu?

Thanks saraf - we went to Finland in February so we're alright for thermals but I appreciate the tip! I'm surprised M&S are even selling them at this time of year!
