Hi online users!

We are very excited to be going on our second trip to Kgalgadi in September. We went for the first time last year, and it looks like the Kgalagadi has sucked as back in, just as many people said it would.

This year we are being more adventurous and staying at unfenced camps. We have booked for two nights at rooiputs, but now have heard that Polentswa may be a better option? Some advice please!

A) one night at Polentswa and two at Rooiputs or
B) two nights at Polentswa and one at Rooiputs?

Thanks :)

Welcome to the forum wendzh.

If it were me, B)

The lodge at Rooiputs could mar your experience there, and at Polentswa the sites overlook the waterhole.
Also you can get to Union's End if you want to.

Hi wendzh

We stayed two nights at Rooiputs (No. 4) and one night at Polentswa (No. 1) last January. Both camps are very lovely, with a superb view into the wild.
I think you can’t do anything wrong!

It depends a bit on your itinerary and where you will stay the night after. After Polentswa we drove to Kieliekrankie so it was a long travel (Rooiputs – Polentswa 1 night – Kieliekrankie) two days in a row.

We experienced almost no traffic in the Polentswa region. So if you are looking for remoteness, Polentswa may be the better option. At Rooiputs we heard some noise from the construction site during the day. On the other hand, the game drives in Rooiputs area were very nice.

I would go for b)

Peter

Thanks for the advice.
Due to friends, availability etc, we have decided to keep our bookings the same, but have added one night at Polentswa. More reason to come again next year!

31 Aug Tweerivierin
01-05 Sept Mata Mata
05 -07 Nossob
07 Polentswa
08 Nossob
09-11 Rooiputs.

Very excited!

@ Bush Baptist: isn't it so that a lodge is being built in Polentswa as well? According to their website they will open this month ... or is it further away from the campsite than the one in Rooiputs? While I have heard many people who have seen this development in Rooiputs I have yet to hear anything about how the situation in Polentswa is.

I will be spending 2 nights at each in a couple of week's time  (the campsites not the lodges!), so I will report back.

Hi all,

Another first post from a new forumite :) Thanks for the feedback - Wendzh and I are very excited for our second trip back to Kgalagadi... it really gets under your skin!

We'll check out what's happening with the lodges when we're there and see what we can find out. While I can understand the need for the development (particularly from the Bots side), I only hope it's done sensitively with the nature of KTP in mind.

Rich

Welcome to the forum Rich.

When I popped into Polentswa in Nov 2011, there was no evidence of building, but in March 2013 you could see the Rooiputs lodge from the SA road.

Would be interesting to see if someone has seen the Polentswa lodge considering it should already be opening this month. I hope that no news is good news meaning it's not too intrusive on the campsite or seen from the road.

I think there was a mention of the new lodge in the Go! Kgalagadi edition. Will see if I can find it.

We were there in mid May and saw no signs of the new lodge from either the campsite or the waterhole.
According to the developers website it will consist of eight tents and a main lounge/dining/viewing area.
The website states that everything is on track to open July 2013.

Maybe it is out of sight.

If anyone wants the www. address send me a pm.
I do not want to be read the riot act for posting non Sanparks content. :rtm:

Thanks for the advice, we had a fantastic time at both Polentswa and Rooiputs, although Polentswa won the contest hands down as the best camp! It may have been the leopard and her cub we spent over an hour with, and the three lion at the waterhole the next morning thats makes us biased, but what a great experience.

Update on the new Botswana lodges: the one at Polentswa is very far in the distance, and has been constructed to blend in with the ridge, so during the day you can see it if you look for it, and at night, if you stand at a certain spot, looking to the side of the bush in front of you, you may catch a glimpse of a light on the horizon. It really did not spoil the surroundings for us.

The Rooiputs lodge is very much visible form the road, but once again blends in with the surroundings. I think from Rooiputs campsite, it is visible from 5 and 6 (they look up at it) but from 1-4, you are aware of it but it doesn't bother one too much.

At Tweeriverien reception we met the manager for the Rooiputs Lodge and he invited us on a tour as they were quiet. It is a stunning lodge, and I think it is what the park needs. There are only 9 or 10 units, so maximum another 20 people in the park. When I first heard they had a restuarant and bar, I immediately thought music and noise, but remember it is an exclusive lodge, and I highly doubt there will be any parties there which will disturb the peace for the rooiputs campers. I hope not.

Has anyone else seen them?

Hi All
We were in Rooiputs ( campsite 3) in March this year when they were just finishing off the building of the lodge. I was very pleasantly surprised to find that the lodge is neither visually or audibly intrusive. From our side of Rooiputs you could just see the tops of the lodge units but they must be about 300m away from the closest campsites( 5 and 6). Take note that the lodge guests branch off from the Rooiputs access road before the camp so you don't even notice the lodge guest vehicles.

I've never been to Polentwa. How far is the camp from the Nossob road? Is it a hard core drive? Would my 4x4 softroader make it ?
