Hi everyone,

I am of to my favourite park in 3 weeks time. I will be spending some time in the Nossob and Aoub river areas. I can recall that so far the rainfall has not been to good, especially so in the Mata Mata area. How dry is it really?

I normally go in April but decided this year to do the green Kalahari thing....

Comments will be appreciated.

Regards,

Tobie

We were there Dec 21st - mid Jan. our first trip, so no yardstick for comparisons. We noticed though that the Nossob side had had way better rains than Mata Mata. The auob had sporadic thunderstorms with patchy rain - more noise than action. The veld flowers were looking stunning at Grootkolk, Gharagab and the attendant at Grootkolk mentioned that sightings at the camp waterhole would not be good whilst the large puddles persisted as the animals prefer the rainwater to the pumped water.
Not too sure whether good rains have been received on the Mata Mata side since our visit - perhaps some of the more recent visitors to the park can confirm.

@ Tobieo
We returned from the park on Friday and its is the DRIEST we have seen it in the 15 years we have been going there. The past 3 visits have all been Feb/March. This year was the HOTTEST as well. To be honest, when I saw how dry it was up at Dalkeith it left me with a horrible desperate feeling :(
Hope they do receive some rain soon, Nossob had 19mm (probably within 1 hour) while we were there and we believe that Kamqua received a bit too.
Sorry can't be the bearer of better news!

I am sad to hear that it is so dry in the Kalahari.
When I remember how green it was 2 years ago, at the beginning of March, I wonder how the animals will cope (although I know they are perfectly "equipped" for arid regions).
I keep my fingers crossed for a looooooooooooot of rain coming down in the next weeks!

Don't worry, it will chuck down in 4 weeks when we are there!

Sounds like my luck as well BB, we don't have to have the beer in the Rooiputs pool but probably the road puddles

Yeah Tobieo, with the cricket the week before there is no chance it won't rain.

Look out for the fire engine. I was going to pop into Rooiputs but now I have a good reason to do so.

Hi BBaptist
Will be at Mata Mata, March 17-19 with a bus full of school kids. Hope we meet somewhere at a cheetah sighting in the Auob! And yes, a bit of late rain would help, so we can have a few late springbok lambs being born too...
Gop bless,

Friedrich von Horsten

Anne-Marie,
I wish you a good flight and I am looking forward to your trip report. :D
Maybe all the cricket participants can do a rain dance to improve the rain situation at KTP
