We were at Twee Rivieren from 19 to 26 December, lots of ice, bottles of water, bread, every thing.

The only thing that bother me is the price of their curios. Defnitly too expencive but the food was good and the price also.

There were even some nice fresh fruit.

because in Septembre, was nothing at TR, Nossob and Mata Mata
(but at TR... after they receive "MY" meat, tourists found what they want )

In October Nossob and TR shops were closed each for one day
because they were out of stock. Gladly, we had brought most
of our supply from Upington or bought whatever we forgot on time
before the shops closed.

Elmar, why didn't you use a pan to fry your meat / wors?
I know it's not the same as a braai but before letting it go to waste,
I'd rather prepare it that way.

By the time we got to TR, we were suspicious that the meat may be off, as it was very hot in Kgalagadi and with the electricity going off at MM at 10 pm, the meat was not kept at a constant temp. We dedcided rather not to eat the meat than taking the risk of being sick during our last couple of days in the park. Will be better prepared next time.

We have been to KTP twice. We are fortunate that we live in SA. We have taken everything with us - water (in a fitted tank and extra jerry cans), bottled water, food, two car fridge/freezers, wood, charcoal, extra diesel, gas bottles, etc. I must say we have found the shops pretty lacking in supplies and have been grateful that we have been self-sufficient. The one, rather strange, but useful, thing we did find in a shop was masking tape - which we needed to fix a window on the bakkie canopy that had come loose!!

I feel sympathy for people flying in from overseas because they are limited in what they can bring. Best to stock up in Upington before getting to KTP.

We were there in December, and the shops were fully stocked. No problem at all. Don't forget that the shops are run by SANParks now.
And the extra shop outside Mata-mata is very handy too, their springbok filet is really good.

That would be me. I'm leaving in about two weeks from San Francisco. Seven rights in rest camps (2 in TR) and four in wilderness camps. Traveling solo, so I can't delegate planning or shopping. I will overnight in Upington, but would love to crib off someone else's shopping and kit list.

no problem for seven nights in the parc, you will find all you need... in (at) Upington

last time I stayed 3 weeks and nothing in the 3 shops... happily some people helped me and in one month I will stay 4 weeks
but maybe thanks to the cricket I will find the shop a bit better stoked
in 5 years, never I found the shops well-stocked, but in Nossob was some ladies who made bread, a good bread... eatable several day later

never known the shop in Namibia... will try very soon ... Sprinkbok filet, why not

One thing that I find is an absolute necessity is a collapsible cooler. Buy your meat and dairy, a bag or two of ice and pack them away pronto. Fill used soda pop bottles with water and freeze for ice. Whatever hasn't melted from the ice purchased in Upington goes back into the freezer as soon as we get into camp. Make as many ice cubes as possible. Freeze juice boxes if you aren't using them right away. We always bring a pillow and that goes on top of the cooler for extra insulation.

Of course I am assuming that you are staying in the chalets and not camping.

Jeez, I've been waiting since September for this answer.

In a couple of weeks, I'll be driving to Upington from Johannesburg, and the next day to TR. I know that it will be hot as blazes. Much of the advice in this thread (and I've read every page) is in the context of Spring, Winter or Fall travel. What about February?

Is there 12VDC fridge rental available in Upington? If so, I'd appreciate a PM as to source. I'll be in a rest or wilderness camp every night, so I'll have access to those fridges, such as they are. But the frozen food and I will be at the mercy of the heat and sun when not in camp.

We were there midway December, and had no trouble at all.
Okay, we have a 12V cooler, a good one, but it only cools to 18 degrees below ambient. (Not to 18 degrees!)

And we could get meat all over the place, frozen, and good. Actually we left KTP with meat as we had too much. Do not forget that the shops are run by SANParks now, they are well stocked.
And there is the shop just outside Mata-mata, in Namibia, with good lamb and springbok, also frozen.

The fridges in camp are good and will keep your meat frozen. Just make sure you have plenty cold stuff in the cooler (you can buy a normal one in Upington), keep it in shade, and it should be fine.

There is an OK Groc were they used to be.


Most practical would be to get your meat from PnP butchery. It is run by a guy who owns another butchery in town and I can really recommend their meat.
