Hugh,

Yes they belong to Sanparks. If you go to the Namaqua National Park under the menu (Parks (A-Z), and then go to accommodation, you will actually see photos of the camp sites and a short description with GPS co-ords where they are. There are 8 of them in total.

Stayed there 3 weeks ago. You book through a lady stationed at the Skilpad office, called Elanza van Lente. Camped 4 nights at Delwerskamp (no ablutions/toilets) which is about 1.5 km north of the Groenrivier gate. Then moved north to Kwass se Baai for 3 nights (with longdrops). Stunning little bay and enjoyed a lot. Challenging 6 km section of loose sand just south of Kwass.

You definitely have to pre-book. No water, shade, cellphone reception along coast. Take everything with you, including wood (and shade).

Stay for a week to 10 days. Should be stunning in flower season.

@proacc,

Tks for the valuable information about the camps. I did the route some time back before the camps were established so was not sure where more or less they are.

Just another question - not sure if you will know the answer - we will be coming down via Springbok, Hondeklip Bay then down the coastal route to Groenriviermond - thus not passing through the Skilpad section. Can one do a telephonic booking and then do an internet transfer?

Problem is that I will not know long beforehand on which days I will be in the area so will most probably want to do the booking when we arrive at Hondeklip Bay, seeing there is no cell reception (and internet connection) down the coast.

Would appreciate your or anyone else response who perhaps have done this before.

Blackie

Contact details for bookings below. (you make your booking at Elanza and then receive the normal booking confirmation via the SA Parks headoffice in Pta.

Elanza (Skilpad office): 027 6721 948 / E-mail: elanza.vanlente@sanparks.org

Good luck !

Thanks proacc and Dreamer for the responses.

Dreamer, you do not perhaps have the GPS co-ords for the different camps as mentioned in the your other thread?

Sorry, I just noticed that the GPS co-ords are listed on the Sanparks website for these camps.

Hi! We plan to visit the Namaqua coast camps in September 2013 and need advice please: Should we rather enter the park from Garies, Groen River Gate, and travel north to the Skilpad office visiting 3 or 4camps or should we exit also via Groen Rivier office? Should we do the Park beginning of September or end September? The photos posted of the Park make a visit a must do!

If you want to enter the park via the Skilpad section you need to enter from Kammieskroon side.

Visiting the coastal section and the campsites there would require a 4x4 or at the minimum a 2WD with high ground clearance and a difflock.

The correct time is debatable depending on the rain etc. Flowers along the coastal route tends to be a bit later than inland and also lasts longer due to the cooler temperature. My preference would be early September rather than end September.

Regards.

Blackie.
