Kgalagadi:Getting there from Cape Town (2)

Unread postby Ed the Hyena » Fri Jun 19, 2015 9:13 pm

Just wondering, anybody ever took the road between Vanrhynsdorp and Loeriesfontein on to Brandvlei, in stead of the Calvinia route? ....or is that a bad idea since I don't see any suggestions about same since the start of this thread... :hmz:

Hi Ed,
It's mentioned on this thread viewtopic.php?f=38&t=78636&hilit=Loeriesfontein and on p19 of this one viewtopic.php?f=38&t=10504&p=1785343&hilit=Loeriesfontein#p1785343 My guess is that although it's shorter, because it's gravel from Loeriesfontein that it won't save you much time, but I'm sure more knowledgable 'mites will be able to give better answers.

On a related note, has anyone travelled CT -> Vanrhynsdorp -> Calvinia -> Upington recently and able to comment on the stop & goes?

Thanks,
Mez

Hi Ed,
I must admit I haven't done that road for about 3 years but I will say on the two occasions I drove it, it was in very good nick and of course it is vastly shorter. I just shy away from it now as I'm just a bit concerned about blowing a tyre on the dirt at such an early stage of a Kgalagadi trip. Take that route an let us know what it's like now :)

we just drove the road two weeks ago with a baby on board - very fast route, only 2 stop&goes between citrusdal and clanwilliam ... there was a bit of truck traffic before calvinia, but after that, just a straight shot, easy driving, 140kmh on cruise control .... we did turn off in Kenhardt to go to the Augrabies
