We just came from KTP and had a very quiet week! Mata Mata region was quiet between 02 and 03 December, we then moved down to TR and had some decent cheetah at kamfersboom and some lions in the Nossob between Leeudril and Kij Kij on some days but overall my least productive trip in 5 years. Strange how it ebbs and flows from one week to the next. :hmz:

No foxes
No leopard (still no leopard for me in 7 trips :wall:  )
Planning the next trip already...

Hi JB were you in Nossob from 10 - 13 Dec? I've met some folks from Witrivier there and just wondered if it might have been you. :hmz:

I've just returned from a 2 week trip to KTP from 1 - 14 Dec. The sightings varied from day to day depending if it was soaking wet, cool or hot.

Our trip started of slow, but we always had some good sightings per day except for a few days after the rain on 8 Dec.

Starting off south between 1 - 3 Dec we had lions sightings at Kamfersboom (lone male early morning walking along river bed), Kij-Kij (lioness drinking at midday), Rooiputs (male in our A frame No 4 and females near the water hole), Leeudril to Rooiputs (sleeping under a tree). All these lions resulted in no cheetah sighting by us. Also spotted a hyaena den about 20 km from TR towards Rooiputs. These guys explored our camp site at night.
Saw 2 hyaenas early morning at drinking at Kij-Kij with lots of blood on their faces after a good meal. Could not find the kill, but must have been not between Melkvlei and Kij-Kij.

When returning south on 14 Dec we saw a male lion at Rooiputs, again the hyaena, cape foxes about 12 km from TR and before Leeudril. On the 15 Dec we spotted a cheetah drinking at Rooiputs and a Cape Fox den near Rooiputs water hole below the new lodge. Again hyaenas in the camp at night, but we had no visit of the male lion we last saw below the lodge around 19:00. Those staying long enough at Rooiputs camp can expect visits from lions and hyaenas.

Up north lions were king and we had very few sightings of other cats. Lots of lion visits to Nossob hide from 5 - 6 Dec and Maries draai where we saw two mating pairs. Saw lions "swimming" across the Nossob at Maries on 8 Dec.

Cheetah at the waterhole at Nossob on 6 Dec and visits of spotted hyaena and brown hyaena at Nossob hide at night (saw my torch light on the webcam on 7 Dec).

Kwang was again the place to find lions and brown hyaena.

Lions were spotted at Polentswa waterhole and apparently near the camp before our visit ~ 5 - 6 Dec.

We had a wonderful lion sighting just south of Lijersdraai water hole on 10 Dec and due to that missed out on a good leopard sighting about 9 km north that Astromatt witnessed. However we were still lucky to see the female walking across the river bed with wilde beest in the back ground. Between 10 - 13 Dec the leopards south of Grootkolk killed two wildebeest and springbok. We did not saw the kill or leopards but received info on the kill from other visitors and Astromatt.

Brown hyaena was seen at Gharagab waterhole on 9 and 10 Dec at night. After drinking it chewed on a Eland carcass (last of the Elands that were killed early Dec by lions at Gharagab camp) We had no luck seeing lions at Gharagab but heard them in the distance towards Grootkolk.

Lions (2 males) were spotted twice between Lijersdraai and Kannaguass water hole on 10 and 11 Dec.

We had some quiet days as well, but at least saw some rare sighting of honey badger near Nossob and porcupine near Rooiputs.

For reasons unknown a red hartebeest died along Maries draai. This attracted large number of vultures (cape and lappet face) fighting over the meat and brave jackals chasing the birds away.

On the last day at Nossob (14 Dec) we spotted two lions at Maries again.

The lions come and go, but if you stay for at least 5 days you will see them either at Maries, Nossob or Kwang. Bedinkt was very quiet and only one lion sighting at Langklaas. After the rain antelope did visit this water hole even though it is closed.

Cheetah was seen roaming between Cubitje Quap and Kwang / Nossob but we only had sighting near Nossob twice.

Did not see lots of bat-eared foxes and AWC as during our winter visits.

- wild cat at Sitzaz
- cheetah at Craig Lockhart
- 5 lion at Dalkeith (southern entrance)
- honey badger (14th borehole)
- 2x cheetah Auchterlonie
- male lion at kamfersboom
What a morning!!!!

Hi Jo we were the first car to spot the lion near Kamfersboom at 6:30 with no other visitors from TR and followed it for about 1 hour as it walked towards the waterhole and passed it only to rest on a dune around 7:30 right next to the road. By that time a few cars arrived from Mata-Mata side, but not sure if you were one of them. Pity we did not know about the cheetahs at Auchterlonie and turned back to TR to back up and headed to Rooiputs where we met a huge male in our camp site.

Sorry that we missed you by a few minutes or hours.

SG, I think you guys should buy a chalet in KTP and sell your home house & rather rent when you are there. You spend far too much time in KTP.
Whatever (according to BB): "You are correct but I don't want to admit it".
