Hi AntonA :D

We saw 3 lots of cheetah this trip - one was between Montrose and Rooibrak waterhole with a kill , then there were a pair of brothers hunting wildebeest just on the MM side of the loop to Dertiende Boorgat and they were seen in that same area 2 days later again so that seems to be their turf .. Gertie and her 3 cubs were a couple of hundred meters on the MM side of Sitzas waterhole - in fact you could see the waterhole from where we were. There was a report of the same 4 very close to Kalahari Tented Camp one morning so thats obviously where they hang out as Sitzas is only about 5 km from KTC ...

They were on the main road from MM to TR ... I think the split you are thinking about is on the Nossob side between Rooiputs and KijKij ? The old Bots road that you can take because they havent finished that last part of the road yet ? DONT take the split unless they have graded it recently - it was diabolical and took a good few years of life off the car I think  ..

Have a stunning trip and will hold thumbs for those cheetah for you .. it is already bitterly cold so come prepared for that and enjoy enjoy !!

Cheers Gill

Thanks so much.

Last question. When I drive down from Nossob to TR on my last day on my way to Upington where we will sleep over.

Can I drive straight down from Nossob to TR or should I rather take the Dune road?

Many thanks,

Hi Anton

Yip, you can drive straight down from Nossob to TR no problem ... it will be quicker than taking either the upper or lower dune roads ...

ENJOY it so much and holding thumbs for some amazing sightings for you

Twee rivieren sightings board from yesturday:
- cheetah and lion near melkvlei
- cheetah near urikaruus
- lion on marie's draai
- lion at mata mata

We just had time to take a drive up to leeudril and back- nice herds of gemsbok and springbok. Jackals still trying to feed on some of the dried out eland carcasses. Off to nossob today so will check in at the end of the week again!

So on leaving the park at Twee Rivieren, we have decided that Scouter was right on her comments earlier - also one of our quieter trips. Although we can't complain with what we saw, we just didn't see the numbers we usually see. Great herds of gemsbok, springbok, red haartebeeste. The 3 nights we had at Mata Mata was probably the most quiet days we have ever had in the park (1 lion, 1 cape fox and the usual game). We only saw 2 bat eared foxes in 7 days in winter, when they normally come out earlier and go to bed later...so you normally see more of them. No spotted hyena. We did have great, if not very distant sightings of a cheetah north of Nossob, brown hyena at Maries, leopard mom and subadult cub near Cheleka, lions near Jan se draai. This morning-lions climbing the far river bed on the way up to Leeudril (skiddy corner)....on the Auob side.... 1 lioness walking past the Mata Mata waterhole Thurs night. Highlight of the trip: Porcupine in broad daylight on upper dune road before Eland waterhole!! So as usual we loved every moment, had good sightings, but definitely on of the more quiet trips

Jo we had the same experience in May, people didn't see the numbers. We had more luck than others.

Even if you do not see much it is still a magical place...but I must say it is very odd that the people do not see that much cats in the last three months. :hmz:

We were there in the last 2 weeks of February and we saw cats every day except when we went up to Grootkolk. I also saw my first leopard in KTP and ended up with three leopard sightings.

Hope the sightings will start to pick up from now :D

One of my friends also just returned and it seems from people he spoke to (didn't see it himself) there have been leopard sightings at MM camp waterhole and even Craig Lockhart-Dalkeith area recently?

Any confirmation of this?
Planning the next trip already...

Morkel777

We were in the Mata Mata area and at the camp for 3 nights, regularly checked the waterhole at night - no leopard, lioness and brown hyena yes. Didnt heard anything mentioned about a leopard in the area and nothing on the sightings board ...... but I hope what you heard is true, would be nice to see a leopard in that area!

A couple of snaps from last week.....
