Hey Jo, didn't you struggle to find skiddy corner on the 'new' road.
It is now a 'fond' memory of the past.

Hi there,

I am also back from 8 days in Kgalagadi and I would like to share with you some sightings. Photos will only follow much later. I am in a hurry so please ignore spelling and grammer mistakes (I am Afrikaans).

In the firts two days at Kalahari Tented Camp we saw brown Hiena at thye water hole and the one night a Spotted Hiena walked up to our tent and came as close as 2 meters from our tent. We had to watch it from inside. We saw 2 Cheetahs twice near Dalkeith en saw 2 Cheetahs of the familiy of 4 near Sitjas. The other two must have been close by.

Then one morning I saw Leopard walking on a dune just past Dalkeith but towards Dalkeith. We then went and had some koffie at Dalkeith and 20 minutes later the leopard arrived and drank water at the waterhole. This was obviously a great experience. According to other people, when we left a nother leopard (male) walked past the waterhole.

Ons afternoon we just missed a kill by the 4 cheetahs but had an 1.5 watching them eating a ostrich. This was also very nice just to sit there and enjoy the cheetahs close tothe road.

At Nossob we saw the Lions every day for 3 days. the one morning they were roaring big timeand myself, wife and son of 8 went to the hide. As we passed the main gate to the gate of the hide, a female lion was standing on the other side of the gate. I quickly went for the hide gate, but my son thought this was a great opportunity for a photo, so I had to grab him and pussed him into the gate of the hide.

We then followed the 3 female lions for almost an hour when the gate opended. We came back at +- 9:30 and at 10:00 everyone was running towards the hide, and things even got better when we saw two males lions walking towards the hide water hole. The one drank some water but the other one had an injured front foot and just walked past.

Te next day a brown hiena came twice to drink water at Dakeith.

In the next few days we evey day saw lions between 20 and 30 kilometers north of Nossob. They were lying next to the road and did not care that we were sitting there and looking at them.

We had some realy great experiences and enjoyed the 8 days in the park.

Any update from anyone that has recently visited? Has the rain that fell over Easter made any difference to the areas that were suffering from the severe drought. Are the animals surviving? How are the sightings? :hmz:

Hi Tobieo,

I came back from the park about 10 days ago. Sightings of big cats was very poor but the general game viewing was superb - very large herds of springbok, gemsbok, hartebees and giraffe. Saw a number of honey badger and suricates as well. Raptors, apart from vulture and pygmy falcon, were also scarce. It seems that the best viewing was from about 9am onwards, once it had warmed up in the riverbed - the animals tend to move into the dune, where it is warmer, during the night. The park itself was looking very good.

Hope this helps

Regards

Myles

Temperature wise, we were very lucky. Only on our last morning was the temperature below zero (-3), most of the time it was at +3 to +5 in the mornings. Normally the temperature is around -5 to -8 at this time of year according to KG. The game only started appearing vrom about 8:30 - 9:00 am

Tobieo - I stayed at KTC (2 nights), Nossob (2 nights) and Twee Rivieren (4 nights).

The large herds were mostly present in the middle section of the Aoub - Kamfersboom to Dalkeith.

Regards

Myles
