Feel free to post questions here related to the park, if I can not answer then immediately there will be other forumites which will be able to assist.

Thanks

We arrive at KTP on the 12 th of October. Unfortunately my Father is not well at the moment and I want to give my Mother some contact numbers in case I needed to be contacted in an emergency.
Is the main reception number the best one to contact at Twee Rivieren given we will be in various of the wilderness camps and they will then be able to get a message to me?
Thank you for any suggestions folk might offer

Simon,

You can ask the Twee Rivieren reception to forward any emergency calls to where you might be in the park, they are in radio ciontact and will get hold of you.

The reception number is 054 561 2000 / 2050

Hope this helps

Kgalagadi Guru,

Any idea when the road between Samevloeiing and Kij Kij will be re-opended?

I drove this on my very first trip in 2005 I think, but since then it eluded me and I would very much like to drive it again during my April/May 2011 visit.

Thanks.

The Road between Kij Kij and Leeuwdrill will be closed up to at least March 2011 due to the upgrading. I have been on the road two days ago and the contractors are busy to Finnish on time (or before). As mentioned on a previous posting you are welcome to go to the Botswana reception and get a day visitors pass which will allow you to drive on the Botswana side (towards Rooiputs). The day pass would just be for driving on the two track Botswana road and you will not be able to get onto the closed road until you get to Kij Kij.

Hope it helps

Thanks, Kgalagadi Guru, so the road might be open when I arrive in April - good news!!

Just a question, to obtain a permit to drive on the Botswana side, would you need a passport?

Blackie.

Tks Kgalagadi Guru - I assume that once the road from Samevloeiing to Kij Kij is open, the Leeudril 4x4 trail will be re-opened?

From info on the Sanparks website, it seems that one can drive this on your own? How difficult is the route or is it easy going, provided you use 4WD and deflate tyres?

Thanks.

Blackie.

Will a Toyota Avanza be high enough to see over the high edges on some of the KTP roads? I will not be doing any 4x4 routes and the ground clearance of the vehicle is also not of concern.

At some places on the Melkvlei - Dikbaardskolk road, it is cut deep into the riverbed and viewing is difficult in any vehicle, because of the high grass as well.

Blackie,

The Leeuwdrill 4x4 is a self drive and you will be able to make it with any 4x4. The route is not to test vehicles but the scenery is amazing and yes it will be reopened when the road is open.

Hi...
We visited the KgaLagAdi in the deCember of 2010...when we stayed at the Kalahari tEntEd camp we saw the strangest bird(we have visited the kgalagadi alot before and have never seen it before..)at first we didn't know what type of bird it was,but later figured it out...it was a African Cuckoo(Afrikaanse koekoek).
Is this bird common in the park or was it a rare sighting???

Hello,

I have two questions about travelling in the KTP.

- Is it possible to drive with a normal car (like a Kia Picanto) on all the roads in August? For example we like to visit the Bitterpan Camp.
Is it possible to drive on the small roads shown in this map:
http://www.sanparks.org/parks/kgalagadi/images/maps/full_parkmap08.jpg

- Are the arrows on that map one-way roads?

Thanks a lot!

Best regards,

Sigi

Hi Sigi!

A hearty welcome to the forums! :D

You can't access all routes with a sedan - and that unforunately includes Bitterpan...
And the arrows indeed show the one-way routes. Basically, all the arrows also show the
exclusively 4x4 routes. But you'll be okay with the rest of the roads in a small car.

How many nights do you plan to spend in KTP?
