How steep are the dunes on the Leeudril road?

The dunes are not that steep at all, there are about 3 dunes which might pose a challenge but momentum will get you over it.

The Leeudril 4x4 route is not designed to challenge the vehicle, but to give an off road experience. We went in a convoy of 5 a few years ago, and one dune needed more than one run at it by non-Hiluxes.

Hi – My wife and I will be spending 7 days at KTP. We plan to rent a 4x4 vehicle in Upington but haven’t found the right rental plan. Does anyone have suggestions for affordable and reliable vehicle rental companies? We’d like a high-clearance 4x4 vehicle, but as it’s only the two of us the vehicle need not be too large. Any suggestions? Thanks!

armst147,

Welcome to the forum, hope you will have a great time here.

I agree with icurrie, the company mentioned is well supported by guests in the park so they must do something right.

Hi,
we are going to book this car for our trip in KTP in December:

empty link

Last time we had a Toyota Hilux (not equipped, we were in chalets) and I would like to know if this car is as good as the Hilux as a 4x4. I can't find more info on the web because it doesn't have a specific name, it is called only "Nissan Single Cab".
Does anybody know it?
Thanks!
Silvia

Hi Silvia,

We just returned from Kgalagadi and I can assure you there are many of those Kea rental Nissans in Kgalagadi. Nothing wrong with those cars - they are as tough as any Toyota. In any way as long as you stay on the roads you will not have any problems. Doing well in 4x4 depends MUCH more on the driver than on the car. The 4x4 tracks are easy going in any way.

Enjoy your visit!

Thank you WeskusKlong!
the point is that the rental company didn't give me much details about the car, and since I am reading hear about "low gear" (is it correct?) 4x4, I want to be sure that this car is ok.
We will take the Botswana roads from Nossob to Bosobogolo and from Kannaguass to Kaa, so I think the car is very important (besides of the driver... )

@Silvia; Low Range is only necessary when the going really gets tough. I have not done the route you are referring to but did the Kgalagadi Leeuwdril 4x4 route in 4x4 high range and it was really easy. Keep the tyre pressure low. Remember as it gets very hot in Kgalagadi, the tyre pressure can increase as much as 0.5 bar from cold to hot, so if you check your tyre pressure in the morning it may be (lets say) 1.5 bar (OK) and it can increase to 2 bar during the day - which is to hard for sand. Don't ever stop on the dune's slope - cause that is where you will dig in and get stuck when you try to pull away. Keep momentum until you are on top and then gently slip down the other side. Even getting stuck is not the end of the world. Don't spin the wheels once you are stuck. Stop, get out and see which wheels are stuck before digging yourself in. I assisted a guy with a 4x2 pickup pulling a trailer when he got stuck at Rooiputs by simply removing the sand in front of the stuck rear wheels and he drove out easily - it just takes a bit of thinking.

I would like some advice/information from any forum members who have recently travelled the Nossob - Gharagab - Bitterpan - Kalahari Tented Camp road. I have booked to do this trip at the end of April 2012 - will a Honda CRV handle these roads ?
Many thanks.
BTB
