It is very sad for me to hear about Charlize's death!! :?

We had some wonderful sightings of her and her 4 cubs during our trip in June 2010. That was one heck of a "cheetah" trip! Over 12 days we saw 12 different cheetahs over a total of 7 sightings.

I still need to do a trip report on that trip...once my current trip report finishes and my friggin' computer comes back from the "doctor" where it's been for more than 2 months :(

Here are some pics I posted on Outdoorphoto of the cheetahs (not sure if these will pass the size limit - sorry if they do, I'm sure you will enjoy them!):

1. A lone male walking up to us at Samevloeiing, we were alone first thing in the morning.
Image

2. Charlize and her 4 cubs choking a freshly chased springbok fawn IN THE ROAD about 2km before reaching Leeuwdril from TR! We'd missed the chase by seconds :wall: :wall:
Image

3. They then proceeded to devour it RIGHT NEXT to our vehicle:
Image
I've got many more graphic scenes of this but won't post them here for the sake of civility

4. One of Charlize's cubs with a face full of blood:
Image

5. Two of Charlize's cubs quibble over the spoils:
Image

6. Another lone male, this time very close to TR after sunset, checking out a steenbok against the dunes:
Image

7. We saw a coalition of 3 young males attempting a hunt (very far) close to the Tented Camp one afternoon.

8. Elena and Garfunkle sharing a tender moment between Sitzas and Dalkeith...all 3 were next to the road with Simon lying on top of the calcrete ridge:
Image

9. Eventually Simon got up and crossed the ridge to get to Elena...and I was ready for him!
Image

10. We saw Charlize and her kids again drinking at midday at Samevloeiing - haven't processed the images yet! :hmz:

Like I said, should be able to work through more of the images once I get my TR of this trip going.

Charlize - you will be missed and you are a LEGEN...wait for it...DARY cheetah for raising 4 cubs to adulthood amidst lions, leopards, drought, famine, heat, dust-storms and flash floods.
Planning the next trip already...

   Morkel777 Let me be the first one to congratulate you with your wonderful sightings and beautiful photos! Indeed very lucky to see them with the springbok so near your car!
I am personally of oppinion that the cheetah population in KTP is doing very well and are increasing!
KTP must certainly be the prime Park in South Africa to view cheetah activities!

Looking forward to more photos and your TR! FMJ

Your cheetah photos are stunning, Morkel!

As for the tender moment capture - are you positive it's Elena?
She used to have the collar fastener on her right side which should show
in your photo. :?

Or was there a collar change? Any info anyone? :hmz:

thanks very much folks!

I was sure it was Elena and the boys due to the region they were spotted in, which was apparently where they were keeping in that time. Looking closely now I can't seem to find the necessary "tools" which would confirm that those 2 young ones are "boys"

so maybe it was Lizette?? :hmz:

Judging from the collar, I'd say Lizette, yes. We were there end of March 2010 and she and Elena and their respective offspring kept roaming the area pretty closely to each other. One afternoon they were as close as less than 1 km apart (around Auchterlonie).

Just got back from the park on Thursday night and as Lionspoon reminded me now I'm sure you would all like to know - even tho it is very sad news.....I saw Dr Mills at a cheetah sighting at the Dune road turnoff just past Auchterlonie on Tuesday afternoon - he ID'd her as Elena and told us that she had unfortunately lost all her 5 cubs before they were 2 months old....first 3 of them, then the other 2 :( :(

He was hopeful though that she would get lucky again soon - as he put it she was on the prowl again and foot-loose so here's hoping things work out better for her next time....

Update from my visit between the 18th and 25th April 2011:

We were fortunate enough to meet Gus Mills and have a chat about the collared cheetahs.
Three of them are regularly seen according to other visitors and the sighting boards.

Lisette seems to be pretty stationary around the 13th and 14th Borehole at the moment.
Gus believes that she got cubs again as she was pregnant the last time he saw her. Unfortunately her collar 'packed up' so he has lost radio contact. However, those visitors who saw her around said boreholes confirmed she had a red antenna (probably gonna change at some point...) and she was seen successfully hunting springboks. As I already mentioned in my TR, I never got to see her although she must have been around on the day when we patrolled the 14th Borehole because other people saw her that day.

Elena's collar is still working and she was last seen in Urikaruus on the 19th or 20th April. We met Eric, the camp manager at Uri the day after and he told us that Gus Mills himself confirmed it was Elena who had been there. Gus also told us that 3 of Elena's cubs were killed by a leopard; he himself doesn't know what happened to the other 2 either.

Then there is the collared cheetah on the Nossob side which Bush Baptist and Dreamer saw in February 2011 (see previous page). Her name is Durbyl and she moved a bit up north by now and was last seen in the Gunong area. Actually, we saw her on the 19th south of Gunong and on the 21st 2 kilometers north of Gunong. When we tried to find her again on the 23rd April we bumped into Gus who was looking for her as well. Another case of tracking a collared cheetah down as her collar is not working anymore either. We never found her that day, but two days later we met those people again who were with Gus when we saw him. They told us they actually found Durbyl and her offspring, but in contrast to our observations with only 3 instead of 4 cubs… According to Gus’s friends the whereabouts of the 4th cub is unknown.

Plus there must be a male collared one with yet another non-working collar. Willem at Kieliekrankie told us about him. But that’s as much news as there is.

I will post some pics of Durbyl and her cubs once I got my pics sorted.

FMJ and the rest of the Forumites conversing on this topic: Is this one of the updates you are looking for? We found this mum and offspring playing in the rain in the Ganong area 9 km's South from Kransbrak on 23 April 2011 at 15.00 (last week). :D

WOW!!! What an amazing shot! Thanks for that and also for giving me hope again for the fourth cub.
We actually could have bumped into each other as we were looking for this mum with her offspring exactly on that day. We also met Gus Mills on that day and got told two days later, that he only saw three cubs. But maybe the fourth one just went a bit astray rather than being take by some other predator.

I'm sure Gus Mills would appreciate if you let him have this (and possibly other photos).
