You do not need a 4x4 to get to Nossob. The roads are much the same as those to MM.

If you do the Nossob 4x4 trail, then you need one or if you go to Bitterpan.

@Malealea,

I do agree with BB and would like to mention it again; there is NO need for a 4x4 if you do go to Nossob. You would need a 4x4 when going to Bitterpan, Gharagab (From main road) and if you do the Nossob 4x4 Eco trail, then obviously any of the Botswana 4x4's then only would you need to have a 4x4.

That´ll be fine

Those Stattement "...as far as i know..." say that I wasn´t sure at all. I have never been to Nossob therefor I can´t say anything about it. If no 4X4 is needed i learnt some thing new thank you

Thanks KG and BB. :D

Your advice is invaluable in confirming what our months of research has shown - we do not need a 4x4 to travel the majority of roads in KTP, only some local information and common sense.

Arriving late July for our first (but hopefully not the last) trip to KTP.

Be VERY careful majura - I can promise you this will not be your last vist to KTP - you will totally hooked on the beauty of this place and you wont be able to stay away

Have a wonderful trip and enjoy everything - its very different to any other place in SA but its incredibly special - wishing you many stunning sightings and an awesome trip

We have been going to kruger for many years and would like to visit kgalagadi as we have heard many great things about this park...

Ok what I would like to know is, what are the best camps to stay at for camping and chalets?
what is the best route to take to get there?

any other advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Good decision ils, but it might cost you your Kruger allegiance.....

There are only 3 camps that you can camp at on the SA side, Twee Rivieren (2R), Nossob, my favourite and Mata Mata.

These 3 are the only fenced camps, and have shops.

The other camps are unfenced and the units are for 2 each only.

2R is the 'Skukuza' of KTP.

As to the best camps, there are many views on this. But MM is cheetah country, Nossob, lion country and 2R can have it all, but like Kruger, timing is everything. Urukaruus seems to be the favourite wilderness camp, followed by Grootkolk.

Hi Ils

We are going to the park fourth year running in March! Really love this time of year as although it can be pretty warm in the day the evenings are also beautifully warm and of course the desert transforms into a garden of eden - especially along the two main riverbeds - the Auob & Nossob. All the camps have there advantages and i must say Nossob is a great camp but the Auob river bed (Mata Mata) for me is fantastic for scenery and game viewing!! One of my favourites is the Kalahari Tented Camp as we are a family it is the only unfenced wilderness camp in which we can stay - it has family units (four sleeper tents). the other favourite 2 sleeper in the far north is Groot Kolk - very special spot and worth the long drive - just book 2 nights at least. As far as camping we love it at mata mata and Nossob as there are lovely big trees and we have always loved the atmosphere in the campsites!!

KTP is truly a magical spot and i am sure you won't regret venturing away from your beloved KNP - enjoy the planning - have a look at travel tales for pics on the various camps too!!

Hi there ils,

I have sent you a PM. What I would suggest you follow the thread on 'Recent Animal Sightings" to get a good idea of where the predators etc are hanging out.

BB mentioned that Nossob is lion country.... Nossob does have good lion sightings BUT it is very unpredictable they can go for days without any sightings. Currently the Aoub Riverbed and Twee Rivieren have very frequent lion sightings.

Hope it helps

It is a personal choice but I lean towards Grootkolk.

There is more game around Grootkolk area. At night too the game is easier to see at the waterhole since it is closer. You also have the choice of driving to Union's End or south to see game which you do.

Gharagab is situated in the dunes and is a beautiful setting and although the game does come to the waterhole it is not as prolific as Grootkolk. There are no drives around Gharagab so if you are happy to just chill at one place then it is fine.

Hi JuanitaMK

Welcome to the forum!

I agree with Sharifa. The other limiting factor is do you have a 4x4? Gharagab is 4x4 access only.
Gharagab is great if you want a feel for life beyond the river valleys but the sightings are less but the peace and quiet is more! Grootkolk-you can often just sit on the verandah and wait for the animals (lion, leopard, brown&spotted hyena have been seen at the waterhole) not to mention the prolific bird life at the little plastic "bird baths" in front of the units. That said, we have actually had more luck on the road up to Union's End!

Enjoy!

Thank you so much for all your replies!! Ill definetly go to grootkolk I'm more for game viewing than the peace and quiet:) do all the units at grootkolk have a good view of the waterhole?:)
