Hi expat.

You might want to read through this topic from the beginning - there is quite a lot of information regarding motorhomes, caravans and trailers etc.

I have not driven a motorhome or towed a caravan or trailer in KTP, BUT I have been there twice and both times the "fixed" canopy on my bakkie (pick-up) has shifted and had to be re-aligned on return home. I would suggest that you secure everything inside and outside the vehicle, because the corrugations can be terrible - depending on when the road was last graded (or smoothed out by dragging tractor tyres).

Some people have 4x4 (i.e. more rugged) vehicles kitted out for camping and that might be an option - but probably rather expensive.

Hope you find the information you need and have a great trip - sounds amazing.

Hi Expat.
I do not know what size of motorhome you are considering?
If it is one of those huge ones, the size of a bus,I would not recommend it.

I have however seen many vehicles that I would call motorhomes handling the non 4X4 roads very comfortably.
I refer to those vehicles that are hired out by camping vehicle companies, cannot mention names but if you google camping vehicles for hire in Namibia or RSA you will find them.

These vehicles sleep 4 people inside and are fully equipped with kitchen, etc.
Some even have toilets and showers.

As previously mentioned the roads can be corrugated and sandy at times, but nothing that especially a hired vehicle cannot handle.

Hi expat, you can certainly hire 4x4 motorhomes that will easily handle the Kgalagadi roads - you just need to deflate the tyres to give you a more comfortable ride. These can be hired in Windhoek, Cape Town and Johannesburg, not sure bout availability in Upington.

We were in Kgalagadi Des 2013 and we drive a VW Amarok with a camper on. That was no problem. All the roads was very good! There was also small sedan vehicles. Enjoy!

Many thanks to all who gave valuable advice. Sadly we are unable to hire a motorhome from Upington Airport, but maybe it is as well, as we would not want to hurt it and we have experienced some horrendous road conditions on previous trips! 4x4 motohomes are beyond our budget. Will have to reconsider our plans.
