I prefer December to January, the days are longer, only issue can be the heat.

The lions prefer to drink rain water, a lot of which collects on the roads, because most of the waterhole water tastes poofy.

I have been in November, through March, when it is hot in the rainy season, and the predators seem to prefer the riverbeds because that is where the shade of the camelthorns is.

I have had great sighting then, and not too much in the dunes.

As for comfort of ride, the case for high clearance or sedan has been stated. The main thing is tyre pressure.

Kgalagadi is a hard place to leave.

I'm flying into Upington on June 15 and don't leave until the 23rd. I've rented a camper that is way more than I need since I'm solo but that's all they had.
I'm a semi pro wildlife photographer and was planning on spending all my time in Kgalagadi, but Augrabies has some appeal as well.
I was wondering what you locals or experienced visitors would recommend doing, would you veer off to Augrabies for a day or 2, or would you concentrate on Kgalagadi?
Thanks for your comments, this forum is WONDERFUL but it makes waiting until June more difficult. I want to be there NOW.

Hello there .. If it was myself I would spend two days in augrabies ,, but the best one to ask is Lion Queen as she is always popping into one or the other and I am sure she knows best

My 5c worth is that seeing you are going to be in the area, try and make it to Augrabies - for at the very least 2 nights which will give you a full day in the park. Just the landscape photography in that park is worth making a trip out to it

one week in the park seems very short... to me 2 weeks is a minimum
but why not 2 days in Augrabies

Hi elosonegro, welcome to the forum.

Not sure if I am reading your post wrong, but it appears to me that you will be based at Upington for the full period of your stay and want to venture from there into either Kgalagadi or Augrabies.

Please note that Kgalagadi is about 3 hours drive from Upington! So if you are not booked in at Kgalagadi it will not be practical to do day drives to there and back. I would then suggest you try to find accommodation closer to Kgalagadi - there are a few places in the area - I can send you names via a PM if required.

I would try and get those 2 nights at Augrabies.......there are some stunning landscape photography opportunities!!!..........

You did not say what type of camper, so I assume you'll stick to the main camps in KTP.......I would then space my five days in KTP as follows

TR one night
MM one night
Nossob two nights to be able to drive north too
TR one night

My reservations have been in place since July and when I popped on the website today I noticed an opening in Kalahari tented camp for the day before I am going to stay there.Currently booked for Nossob that day
Is it worth changing my reservation?
it is quite a bit more,don't mind paying it if it is better to stay there than Nossob
Since this is my first visit, I have no idea what all the camps are like

It is a loooong drive from KTC to Nossob. Where will you be staying the nights around that KTC opening?

But whatever, KTC is very much worth it. It has great views, is quiet, and the tents are very good.
You will find photos of it here, look for the most beautiful sunsets, that is KTC.

You can see in my sig line that I will be staying in Nossob for 2 days before KTC and then Mata Mata afterwards

Just from looking at your dates I'd have to say no. It's too long a drive from anywhere far north of Nossob to KTC, so stopping over at Nossob would be good. And you already have a few nights at KTC anyway.
Now if there was an opening at Kielie???!!!

OK I see you could spend a night at Nossob still so would break the journey...tough choice but I'd still stick with what you have.
Or find something at Kielie.

Just to throw some confusion in I would make the change.

You know that you are in for a looong drive anyway
and my personal preference is always wilderness over main camp.

Sightings can be good on either side though.
