We have 8 nights including 3 with no local water at all. I am planning about 120 litres for 4 guys.

Hi all,
The novice and the family is going CAMPING in TKP… for the first time!

We need tents… can you please help with suggestions on what to buy! We are clueless! We will be doing more and more of the camping thing in years to come!!!

If someone has a packing list… that would be a great help!

Hi issi,

I have a COMPLETE packing list for KTP, please PM me with your e-mail address then I can send it to you.

Also, in terms of tents and equipment, in order for me to help you out, I need to know the setup of your family: how many / kids / ages / parents / married couples?

Hear from you soon!

Issi,

You will not regret it, that I can promise!

Tents depend on personal preference as well as family size. Canvas tents are heavy and bulky but can withstand the elements of nature far better than a nylon tent.

However, nylon tents on the otherhand, are light weight, and takes up less space. The better brands here will be Basic Instinct or Cadac. We have a Cadac 5 man nylon tent and had been camping with it for the last 7 years, using it at least 6 times a year and it is only now coming to the end of its lifespan.

As expected, the nylon tents will be much cheaper than the canvas equivalents. Being a novice, I would certainly recommend you start off with a decent nylon tent - try to get something with a verandah as well. If you then get addicted to camping, you can always at a later stage upgrade to a canvas tent.

Most people have their own customised packing lists but if you browse (Google) you will find many packing lists on the web that you can download and then customise as you go along.

Happy camping!

Blackie

"Novice" in terms of camping of KTP? If the former: I can think of easier places to embed the camping experience?

Hi,
a few months ago I asked you info about camping, I wanted to thank Switchback and WeskusKlong for the suggestions!
In the end we hired a fully equipped 4x4 with rooftop tent and we spent 8 nights in Botswana camps (plus one in Gharagab, Grootkolk and Bitterpan), both in Mabuasehube and Kaa area. It has been a very exciting experience!
Our TR will be ready sooner or later...

Hi Silvia,

If you want to camp, the best would be to hire a fully kitted 4x4 - especially if you want to go on the Botswana side. The 4x4's come with all the gear you may need. Generally this is an expensive option but considering the one-stop service you get it may be worth it. There are companies that have reasonable offers. If you need a link to one you can PM me. I have a Swiss friend that used them and he is very satisfied. The longer you stay, the cheaper the rates are.

Apart for the whole camping adventure, the fact that you only have canvas between you and the wilderness out there makes it a wonderful experience - as you can hear the nightlife in the bush much better than is the case in a chalet.
