Hi john222333
Welcome to the forums.
The condition of the road between TR and Nossob really varies on a daily basis. The roads are graded monthly and then dragged on a weekly basis. If you are lucky, you can have a smooth highway to drive on, or conversely a badly corrugated drive. it's the luck of the draw.
Our experience is that the section between Kij Kij and Dikbaardskolk is notoriously bad, however that may just be luck we have expierence
However, as long as you remember to deflate your tyres the roads should be quite managable

Hi John222333

I am   that you are going in March!!

We were there in Dec before the rains so things may have changed, but there was a detour running parallel to the normal road between Rooiputs and Kij Kij which was quite good, albeit a teensy bit narrow for 2-way traffic. I was led to believe that the road between Kij Kij and Dikbaardskolk was badly corrugated at that time and we were advised to rather take the upper dune road across, which we found quite pleasant.

As GavinW says, it can change from day to day and it really is the luck of the grader and your opinion of "awful".

Enjoy it whatever you decide.

Thanks for the useful info. Its our first time KTP although we have travelled fairly extensively in Africa. We are giving it a good go (14 days) and doing most of the wilderness camps and main camps. Our understanding was that March is very good so we booked it 11 mnths ago. Is it worth carrying firewood and braai stuff? My wife thinks we should just put up with one pot meals.

I think braaing is part of the magic of being in KTP, John222333.

Welcome to the forums :D
Wishing you a wonderful trip.

Welcome to the forums, john222333!

A braai is for sure a must, nothing beats that pure bliss feeling and relaxing around a fire after a hard day in the bush!

Hi John222333

We are also going to be there in March and due to the good rains in the last few days think we may be treated once again to a green Kalahari! This will be our fourth trip in four years - always in March. Just to add on the braai front we basically braai 90 percent of meals as the evenings have been beautifully warm and you will want to have a lovely fire to sit around - both at traditional and wilderness camps - nothing beats that ambiance of a Kalahari campfire listening to the jackals, gecko's and other night sounds!! Even when we are having a pasta pot we still light a fire and sit around enjoying the magic of the KTP!!!

Rooiputs 11-13 March 2012
Nossob 14-16
Polentswa 17-19 M
KTC 20-21
Mata Mata 22-24
TR 25
Augrabies NP 26

I think I better talk to my wife! You all make me feel very excited about going.

I arrive in Upington at 1130. Then its off to the Pickn Pay to grab food. I am not familiar with SA supermarkets. Will they have Braai utensils ,grill, firewood etc? Then theres the meat issue. I know each wilderness camp have gas fridges which apparently struggle in the heat. Do we get fro but I guesszen meat and hope we can get it to camps on time.. Urikaruus is our first stop so thats maybe a 4 hour drive. I suppose Pick n Pay do coolboxes. Our Daihatsu Terios is not that big!!

Right I will go and read all these replies to the other half.

Thanks very much

Thanks for the information - probably a confirmation of what I suspected.

However I would like to send pic for you to see what I am talking about - how should I do this?

Post it in this tread using tinypic. There are instructions somewhere else on the forum.

As stated above, braaing is the way to go

You can buy braaiwood and ice at the 3 main camps ie Twee Rivieren, Nossob and Mata Mata, (but not at the wilderness camps), so there is no need to buy wood in Upington if you have space restraints.
I would however recommend that you pre plan your meals and purchase the meat you require prior to going into the park. We generally get our meals vacuum packed into individual meals before we get there. I believe PnP Upington will do this for you, as will Skaapland butchery in Upington.
As you are staying in tented or non camping accomodation, you will find that most of your crockery and cutlery including braai tongs are provided. If you need anything over and above the basics, you will be able to get that at Pnp. (Like smarter braai tongs etc), but it's not really nescessary.PnP will probably also have coolboxes, if not you will find some in Upington.

Upington to TR is a two and a half hour drive, allow and hour in TR for booking in petrol last minute shopping etc and at least 2 hours to Urikaruus. That's 5 and a half hours. Gates close at 7pm in March so you will be fine :P

Enjoy paradise

Apologies JVR, its KKrankie the first night which is closer. Thanks for the fantastic info. I have emailed Pnp and will plan ahead. Ordered a collapsible cool box. Convinced wife of Braai neccesity! Now feel more in control.

Hello john222333 and welcome to the madhouse  Beware of addiction ...

About braaing -- if you have space constraints, you can also make a fire with {whisper} charcoal
Also available at PnP.

Hi guys

I recently just booked two seperate trips to KTP. One from 18 -29 Dec and the other, 13-20 Jan. Last time I was in the park I was told by one of the rangers that due to different tasting water on the Nossob side, the animals are starting to move more to the auob side. I did not believe him because I have not seen any of this on the forum but can someone please clarify this for me as he IS indeed a ranger.

Thank you so much
Regards

Ari
