This photograph is posted with the courtesy of very good friends of mine from the Nelson Mandela University, George Campus, being Jos & Ilza Louw . . . themselves being very regular (and near fanatical) visitors to the KTP every year. This must surely also be one of the very best action pics that I have ever seen in the Kgalagadi.

The pic was taken by pure co-incidence when they saw this male leopard next to the road a few hundred meters on the TR side of the Samevloeiing waterhole. The cat was resting very casually in the shade of a Camel Thorn tree . . . when this shadowing jackal, ventured just that meter too close . . . and it was caught and killed by this beautiful leopard in less than a second.

It was all in a split split-second that this action happened . . . while Ilza's burst mode on her camera was fully operational on a would-be tranquil scene with a leopard resting in the shade! !

It’s important to note the pic shows the cat about to lift itself and the dead jackal into the lower branches
of the tree above. This leopard has been the resident female in the area between Twee Rivieren and Samevloeiing for a long time.

Hi Red Dune,
Thanks for the wonderful picture and sighting  . Please do thank your friends Jos and Ilza too.
The leopard in question is Maja. She was the dominant female in the TR area for many years before she was relocated north.

I would love to have this sighting for my records and the identification project. Could i ask you to pass on my details (found below) to your friends so that they can report the sighting on my website.
If they (or you) have other leopard sightings then i would also love to hear about them.

Cheers

Lovely sighting Muhammad
The leopard you saw is the youngster Balete, she is the daughter of Tswana and has been seen quite a bit recently around the Nossob area. She is looking very healthy.
Could i ask you to send me a full report on my website (link below).

A little update in relation to Red Dunes post, this sighting of Maja was from 7th April 2007.
