Wildlife and travel magazines, do you subscribe?

Unread postby Meandering Mouse » Sat May 05, 2012 6:25 am

I have been a loyal subscriber to "Getaway" for many years. I have found their articles to be diverse and constantly improving. Each month seems to hold a feature related to Sanparks. I enjoy their practical advice on some of the camping related articles and I have also made use of the special offers.

A few years back I received a email from "Getaway" apologising for being late in sending my prize. "What prize?", I thought :hmz: It turns out that I had won a watch for renewing my subscription. 8) It went to my son, as his watch had been stolen from his cricket bag.

Another magazine I get regularly, although I have mixed feelings about that, is "African Geographic". It is a gift subscription from my work. I am thinking of possibly changing it to a birding magazine offered by the same group.

I regularly by the "GO" magzine, as I find it too has interesting and useful articles. This is another publication that I think improves with each issue. Some of the regular contributers seem to have quite a sense of humour, not to mention a sense of adventure.

I keep the magazines and bring them to the Park when I visit. I have found the guides to be very appreciative in receiving these magazines, as it is another way to supplement their reading.

MM, I can also relate to your sentiments.
I am a 'Weg' (Afrikaans for 'GO') magazine subscriber and also bought back copies having the full set since issue #50 to date (#91) as well as full set of Wild magazine from issue #1 - 18. I use it for research when I plan to visit an area or do a drive out.. The Getaway mag, I will buy selectively and on the odd occasion the Birding issue from African Geograhic.
I especially enjoy the sections in the Go and Getaway where they publish the letters, short experiences and photos from readers.

Hi MM, :D
I am subscribed to Weg/Go Magazine for many years now and religiously buy the Getaway every month. But being a book junkie, I usually browse the bookshops to see what else is on offer. :D

We used to subscribe to Africa Geographic but haven't for the last 12 months. We do get Travel Africa from the UK which I love! When we come over to SA I end up coming home with Getaway magazine and Go and any other nature mag that looks good which I can't get over here. Have been seriously considering a subscription to Getaway for a while so I might just do that soon. :)

I love both Getaway and Go and if I know of anyone going to SA they get begged to bring me back copies. My first trip to any shop when I land is to the newsstand to track them down.

I used to get Travel Africa and Africa Geographic but the bookstore that used to sell them here closed down and I haven't seen them on sale anywhere else. SO used to have B&B on subscription, but that was a birthday present.

Unfortunately the subscription for the UK is out of my league so I just have to make do with getting hold of them when I can.

Having said that Africa Geographic does have an online version called Safari Interactive.

To Those Folks Outside of SA who love Getaway Magazine:
I was so sad years ago when they raised the postage costs for Getaway and I could not afford to renew my beloved subscription. Lately I have been getting the digital version and, though I would prefer the hard copy, the digital version is FANTASTIC and really quite reasonably priced. I forget what it costs, but I am certain you can find it on their website. If not, give a yell and I will try and figure out how I subscribed. It is a PDF file and you can print out any pages that you want. LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!

In my opinion "GO" magazine is really producing some good articles.

This month's edition has an excellent run down of all the "camping" camps in Kruger. Extremely helpful for those looking to plan a camping holiday.

I am fortunate in that my brother works for a media agency and I get both GO! and Getaway magazines free each month. I must agree with you MM, in that the GO! magazine has been delivering some great articles of late!

The trouble I have with these publications though, is that they REALLY make me miss and long for being in a SANPark!

I have bought every Getaway since April 1989, the first issue. However, I stopped buying because of a specific "promotion" of an exclusive lodge. It read "A special for Getaway subscribers, only R2700,00 per person per night, sharing" Now is that a special? It is a frigging ripoff. I buy 'Weg' 'Wegry' and SA 4X4.

One question, Is there an English version of Wegry?

This month's Go/Weg has a nice article in it for KNP campers
