I hope this is the right forum - am new, and couldn't find something specifically related to wildlife films or tv programmes.

I'm helping research a history of wildlife films in Africa, and would be very interested to know what you think the most influential South African wildlife films have been in the period 1945-1990.

It seems that it was films like Disney's The Living Desert that got people excited about feature-length wildlife films, and some earliers examples that seem to have made an impact include 'To catch a rhino', 'Lake Wilderness' (on St Lucia) and Dick Reucassel's 'Whispering Wings' on vultures.

I'm particularly interested in any films (or popular books) that involve crocodiles.
I've been trying to track down a film about my dad Tony Pooley's croc research shown on SABC in 1975 or so, called The Ndumu Story, for years now with no success - so if anyone has any ideas on how to track it down, I'll be very grateful.

In my humble opinion, The Silent Hunter, by Johan Varty was one of the 80's most influential wildlife films. Compared to today's professional wildlife documentaries with high definition filming, it probably lacks in quality of images. However, at the time it was made, Silent Hunter was probably the closest people had ever come to the secretive lives of leopards. For me the filming, soundtrack and storyline, captures the atmosphere of the lowveld like very few other films had ever done before or since. I also read that Silent Hunter helped to put Londolozi, where it was filmed, on the map for potential tourists from overseas and therefore probably helped to launch the South African game lodge industry to today's heights.
By the way, does anyone know where one can still get a copy of The Silent Hunter? It was originally released on VHS of course, but I wonder if there are any copies on DVD available.

:D I think you mean John Varty...

The silent Hunter took cameraman John Varty five years to film.It is the story of how heand his trusted friend Elmon Mhlongo develop a unique association with a family of wild leopards. Contained in the film is a vast store of information about one of Africa's most elusive predators, a silent, devastatingly successful hunter- the leopard.

( taken from his book "Nine Lives- Memoirs of a Maverick Conservationist.")
