Was my first gripping tale about Kruger

Bert, I was reading this topic when I saw your first posting. I also have Veldwagter by Hannes Klopper 3rd print 1972, but this book is about Harry Kirkman and not Wolhuter. Also a must have in your collection.

I urge anyone who is seriously looking for this book to take the time to browse through secondhand book stores. I have just found another copy today, its a hard cover in excellent condition and printed in 1984. It cost me a whopping R75.

I have decided to donate this copy to the guides from the Bushman's trail. I am sure it will also go through the hands of Raymond from Berg n Dal. They work in Wolhuter's territory and were very keen to read the book.

I will keep looking and if I find another book in my many browsings, I will buy it and make it available to anyone who is interested.

Good price MM.

Bookdealers in Rivonia sold their last copy for about R400.00. Assistant told me that he had heard that the publisher was considering reprinting.

Anyone else heard this rumour! :hmz: Let's hope so!

It would be wonderful if the did. It really is a classic. I am just enthralled by the descriptions of life during that era. It was really tough.

Sadly, it is out of print :( I did hear rumours that there was talk of another reprint. I will look around, I do know where there is a fairly good copy, but at quite a price.

I was keen to look into the possibilities of making an electronic copy. Watch this space for a while.

I think some of the language used in the book would be considered insulting, so I would be surprised if it is ever re-printed in original form.

Some do appear from time to time on Amazon - I bought one a few years ago that was falling apart, but was better than nothing.

There are a few going on the Amazon UK site, but cheapest one is £23 for hard cover.

Acekam, I hope they don't change the language. I think that Wolhuter was very much a product of his time. Although his language in regards to other races was typical of the era, his attitude was surprisingly open. He also give wondeful insights into many of the characters of the era, such as Abel Erasmus and the Halls family. His chapter on Steineker's horse is a classic.

He writes with great respect of some of the "native" rangers and leaders. He is also deeply touched by the plight of the little girl who wandered off. I wished that I could have read more of Hamilton Stevenson.

By the end of Wolhuter's book, I felt that I knew him and really, really liked him. An intelligent and insightful man.

An interesting little titbit. I managed to get a very good second hand copy that I donated to the guides at Berg n Dal, including Raymond, Rodney and Oris, all of whom are dedicated to their conservation work. I took it with some Africa and National Geographic magazines that I no longer needed.

When they opened the packet to look at the books, for a minute one of the staff members looked confused. Raymond, I think it was Raymond smile and said.. "that is ???? Wolhuter's grandfather". An "aha" look spread over their faces... so it seems that at least one member of his desendants is still involved in conservation.

Completely agree with you MM and my comment was not intended as a negative mark on his character, merely to say that in the modern context, some of the wording would be highly politically incorrect. Although it should be interpreted in the historical context, I still can't see it being sold in a Sanparks bookshop in its original form. I don't think the essence of this wonderful book would be diminished by such minor editing.

Acekam, you might very well have a point there. Maybe some who fit into the "native" population will be able to give better judgement than I can.

I hope that whatever decision is made, the book will be republished soon. It is a gem and for those of us who love history, absolutely priceless.

I am the proud owner of "MEMORIES OF A GAME RANGER" purchased at SKUKUZA on 12 September 1967, an eighth edition copy, it was published by the WILDLIFE PROTECTION SOCIETY OF SOUTH AFRICA.

It cost me R2.90. Looking at it this morning I noticed the stamp I had put on it at the Phalaborwa Gate on 16 - 9 - 1967, on exit on one of so many later wonderful visits.

It was printed by HERZBERG MULLNE (TVL.) LTD.
cnr SPRINGBOK and MAIN REEF ROADS.
INDUSTRIA, JOHANNESBURG.

Hi Everyone!

just been reading the topic and wanted to add my bit too!

I bought a copy of this book from Amazon - the seller was in South Africa and I wanted it for my partner for a surprise Christmas gift - we are both addicted to Kruger - were there for 6 weeks in October and three weeks in May last year - wonderful trip - great sightings!

Back to the topic - the delivery from South Africa took two weeks as advised and I wanted a first edition too - when it arrived it was everything I wanted it to be - old cover, beautifully intact, drawings and tales of Kruger inside. My partner said it was the BEST present EVER - so well worth the searching.

I paid £41.00 including postage (R512 approx) - well worth it for the joy it bought on Christmas Day in England!

Happy hunting!

:D
