It seems like yesterday that I wrote about my son's matric year.
So much has happened since then. I have sold up and moved house and my son is now a qualified zooologist/ecologist.

I do not miss the resposibility of a big house, but I do miss the garden, so our local park has become my stomping ground.

Our local park, situated close to a nature reserve is a story of hope.

Image

When I first moved to this area it was an eyesore, a hangout for criminals and a dumping ground for dead animals and discarded rubbish. When it became apparent that the local authorities could not manage the situation, the community took over.
Local business donated funds, the community lobbied for fencing, more protection and the place was cleaned up. It was once more in the hands of families, children and space for dog training and any number of small initiatives.

Two years ago, on arbour day, scores of trees were donated. Holes were dug by the municipality and on the day, families took responsibility for planting a tree. Another tragic, but bonding experience was the planting of a memorial tree to honour the life of a husband and father who was brutaly murdered.

Recently park benches have been added. This will make it more comfortable for the many elderly people who regularly walk their dogs.

Image

This park has shown how it is possible to turn something around if people just take responsibility. As a community we could have sat and moaned about falling standards, lack of resourses and... and .. and..
Instead, this has become a place of laughter and an example of what can be done.

These pictures were taken this morning, just some of the creatures enjoying an early morning break.

This is our humble home. We live in the Netherlands, near Schiphol Amsterdam airport. We live in the tulip province, with beautiful tulip farms just a few km from our home. The beach is also just 12km from us. Here is a few pics.

This is our house.

Hi Hugh

Wow, what a view...

Were visiting South Africa in July, and our trip also includes 5 nights at ATKV Natalia. Seeing your photo, makes me very exited.

:) only in winter. This year, a lot of animals and birds died, because of so long "under 0° period" and so much snow. I think of raptors and "antelop" who stay here....
