Hi Master Yoda

Thanks for the PM. I'll give this number a call and hopefully be able to get a Terios.

I have really heard good things. Height, fuel economy all only good things.

Thanks again.

No prob.
Keep us updated if you came right with the vehicle you were interested in.

Hi Twilk

I have an Avanza and bought it so I could use it in Kruger as well. Easy to drive and economical. It is higher than a sedan, has good clearance space underneath and lots of space in the back for luggage.
Herman mentioned a Daihatsu Terios - my son drives one and its the same height as the Avanza.
I do recommend the Avanza.

My dear Trusted Beauty has been laid to rest. I have been looking for another car, a little kinder with the petrol, but still good clearance. The Avanza has been a serious consideration. The Terios looks good, but it is a lot more expensive.

Any comments?

Dear Meandering Mouse, sorry about the trusted beauty!
The Renault Duster SUV is a good little 4 by 4 or even 4 by 2.
A friend has had one for 6 months and he loves it! Economical, (diesel), spacious, ground clearance and reasonable purchase price!
If I had to but a new vehicle now, that would be my choice!
Have fun choosing! Kite

Well MM it really depends on your Budget. What about the Suzuki Jimny?

Kite, I like the Renault, but I have been put off by my daughter's experience with spares. They are expensive and sometimes difficult to obtain. Interestingly, AVIS does not use Renault in their business fleets for that very reason.

DPhil, again I have been so burnt by cars that cannot use generic spares. My Honda cost so much more to repair for this very reason. I was sometimes paying double for a Honda vs a Bosch part.

As far as I know, Toyota and VW are easy on spares. I really drive my cars, so it has to be hardy.

MM,

I would go for the more reliable of your various options.
Even if it does cost you a bit more, it will be well worth it imo.

Toyota does have a reputation for reliability. The Terios is also a Toyota product.

Having been badly burnt by repair costs, I am a lot more cautious now.

If cost were absolutely no issue, I would get the VW Amarok. That is in my dreams though.

I have heard that Renault servicing etc can be expensive so I am watching the Dusters to see how they age.
Any new car should be good for the first few years though!
I have also considered the Avanza, mainly because of recommendations on this forum!
Meantime I am keeping my 2006 Polo classic as it has low mileage, 10 year rust guarantee and hopefully good for a few more years!
I prefer a Terios to a Jimny but you may find it useful to see what the experts on the 4 by 4 community forums think.
I like to consider replacements in case of need!!

I find the car price list in CAR magazine( near the back ) useful!
They have sections like passenger cars, MPVS, pick ups and SUVS/double cabs, then list them in price order.
Toyotas usually include some servicing so if you do the required mileage it can be good to have that included.
Ford Ranger single cab was fairly competitive.
Discounts are negotiable so press for a good one!

MM, seems like you have made up your mind on the brand you want to go for. You cannot really go wrong with the Japanese or Korean brands. The German brands are all expensive, not that any car is cheap any more.

Stay away from Chinese brands and you should be OK.

The Terios is a mini Fortuner so can't go wrong with them.

Kite, non of these small SUV's are really great offroad. You need 4x4 lowrange with a difflock for a car to really be good offroad, with enought low rev torque, which the small engines just don't have. Some of the big SUV's are great offroad but you dont want to take them out on a road where you might loose a bumper with airbag and park distance control sensors.

In November I am looking to fly, either to JHB or closer to Kruger & hiring a car.

How do you handle the 100 km per day option, or do you go for unlimited mileage, or is there an option in between?

We always get the package with a limit - in June it was 2200k for 10 days. We drove all day every day and did not travel anywhere that mileage. I fly every trip - too far to drive from Cape Town - and we have always had lots of mileage left over at the end of the trip. We do however always fly to either Phalaborwa or Nelspruit so that might make a difference if you are going to drive from JHB. Now there is Skukuza so no mileage at all outside of park :D :D
