As children we could not wait for nightfall to go and watch the wildlife movies that was shown in the Kruger Camps after our Braaivleis dinner :P. I have not been to one of these screenings recently but I was amazed to see that these wildlife movies are still shown today in some of the camps - weather permitting of course :) .

These days everything is so technological and digitally advanced that I wonder for how long these screenings of wildlife films will remain part of the Kruger camp life. A person can watch any movie you fancy on the laptop anywhere any time in any case. As children we particularly liked the films where lions were the main feature and on our way back to where we stayed in the Camp stories were told of great adventures :D 8) some made up of course . It was fun, but I wonder whether any of you still go, or will make the effort to go to the camp theater at night to watch a wildlife movie in Kruger?

Hi Grantmissy

I also remember going as a child, and have to say that I took my children there............. and still go to the movies, 30 years later.
It has such a lovely "feel" to it. Never miss the movie in Kruger (if there is one).

Last year during August we went to watch the movie at Satara, felt so nostalgic and reminded me of when I was a child.

There really is nothing like watching a movie under the stars in Kruger 8)

JeanniR, I agree with you!

I even just love hearing the 'sound' from the movie as it drifts through the camp in the evenings. Somehow it is just 'Kruger'.

Crested Val they have an open air movie theater in each of the bigger Kruger Camps. You sit on kind of cement blocks and there is a “big” screen and they bring a projector at night and start showing the films about animals. It is almost like a drive-in but you walk there instead. It is very Krugerish if there is such a word and nostalgic in a classic Kruger kind of way

When we were there in March/April we went a few times. The kids (my niece and nephews) went most nights. At both Satara and LS we happened to stay quite close to the 'theatre'. Unfortunately we couldn't always stay to the end due to supper and cooking (I'm the designated braai master usually). My 2-year old nephew got quite frightened by some of the scenes and had to be taken back 'home' a few times.

I think these days they use DVDs and digital projectors.

I think they're definitely still relevant (the films), and are a big part of KNP holidays!

I haven't been to one of the screenings recently, but its definitely on my to-do-list for our next trip, SO only started going to Kruger once we started dating and I've always told her about it, and how much fun it was when we went as kids, so I must make it a priority to take her! Definitely the closest you'll get me to TV in Kruger, but also an experience to watch a movie under the stars, a must do for those who haven't.

I remember the last Kruger wildlife movie that I saw was in Pretoriuskop. They still used a projector and film reel that was kept in a round metal box. Before the movie started a Certificate of Approval was displayed followed by a circle looking like a watch and counting down 10 … 9…8….. :)

All were very excited and people brought flasks with coffee, paper bags filled with biltong and droë wors :P . After the movie a person saw the lights of torches going into different directions of the camp where the movie goers were staying in Camp.

A wonderful tradition which hopefully will be kept going for the years to come.
I must admit I don't go any longer, but we did take our children when they were younger, it was a lovely way of keeping them amused in the evenings and also educational.

but a very interesting topic and I wonder how many visitors they still get attending these screenings.

Last month in Skukuza there were quite a lot of people there every evening.

I would say in BnD there were always between 15 and 20 people (half of them kids) hanging around :)
