We take a few tins of fruit along, put them in the fridge and enjoy them in the mornings whilst the Kruger Cook is preparing the hot breakfast   . A person can even take a tin to the picnic spot to have whilst the bacon, boerewors and eggs are sizzling on the skottel. We like the tinned orange segments, fruit cocktail and strawberries – only one tin at a time :P .

Thanks for the wecome BB....I have in fact been around alot about 50 trips in total over the past 20 years with hopefully a million more to come as the' Parketeering' is as big an addiction as it gets.
My most recent invention is to take a Bed Side box (plastic container with lid does the trick) for self and the beloved into which all the junk that accumulates on bedside tables (chargers , lights, meds etc etc etc......) can be easily chucked.Beloved spouse is known in our family as the Gadget Man and this way I always know the answer to the eternal question of 'where are you hiding my......' :wall:

The Gadget Man (GM)also has an issues with the grunged up shower heads in the Parketeering so in addition to all the other gadgets we now carry ....wait for it...... a spare shower head and b.......y shifting spanner.(which he inadverently left in his Gadget back pack last year resulting in a rather complicated story involving an attempt to board an overseas flight

tent dweller wrote:We have 2 cooler boxes. One is used for all our drinks (Water,Beer,Juice, etc) and for all the other things that need to be in a fridge (Margarine,Mayonnaise,Cheese etc), we buy 2 to 3 bags of ice a day to keep these things chilled. Our other cooler box is for our meat, chicken, bacon etc. All our meat etc is normally vacuumed packed and has been frozen prior to our trip. We also collect silver bags from box wine during the year and we fill them with water (only half) and we freeze them also prior to the trip. The morning we leave for the Kruger we pack the cooler box for the meat in layers. First 2 frozen silver bags then pkts of meat etc then another layer of silver bags, more meat and then the last layer is normally 2 silver bags. This cooler box of ours is only opened once a day to take out the days meat, we normally leave it in our trailer in the shade and after 14 days in the park the silver bags have defrosted but not totally and the meat left in the cooler is still cold.

Great Advice  We do something similar, we freeze 2L bottle of water and do the same thing. We also take a few extra bottles with that we take out on arrival and defrost while we put up camp for ice cold water when we are done 8)

We always take an extra blanket/duvet with this gets wrapped around the cooler bag and provides great extra layer of insulation.

Grantmissy wrote:Very true Rooies. We take our meat frozen to Kruger. We wrap each packet in newspaper before we put it in the cooler bag. The meat stays frozen for much longer that way.

Will definitely give that a try next time! Thanks

Good idea Lolly Loo for quickly packing the bedside belongings as a person is in a way attached to all those needful things and they have to go along on the trip. Each can then scratch for their own stuff in their own box. It is better like that.

Btw I like your term “Parketeering” :)

Hi all, love the handy hints stream, our pet must have are a number of plastic cable ties, which we use on cupboard doors to keep our the monkeys having lost food to them many times.

Very clever Ladylucy

Put a wriggling snake around your neck or alternatively dress up in a leopard suit to scare off the baboons and other apes at the Kruger picnic spots. They are quick to come and say :yaya: grabbing your belongings without permission at the same time  :sniper: . The week before last at the Tshokwane picnic spot there were three ladies just unpacking their picnic fare to start preparing breakfast :P when a Monkey grabbed their plastic container with eggs in it :o  . I think he had a lot of fleas as he was scratching himself very energetically just before that or else he was preparing for the sprint to say HI to the humans. As it goes in Kruger people are very friendly and neighborly 8) and another women brought them three eggs to replace the stolen ones out of good will . I think the saying “not to put all your eggs in the same basket or in this case same tupper” is very true .

My tip, to avoid having to pack weighty/bulky items when flying, is to take trips in the company of friends or family who live in S a and therefore have the required items to hand!

Next time when you enter at Phalaborwa Gate for your Kruger visit and you are not vegetarian, stop at the butchery in Gravelotte town if you still need to buy meat. It is a very small town with just one main street so you won’t miss it. Their meat is excellent for the braai especially for the first night and we have bought a big packet of mealie meal there to make pap in July – I think it is called Jan Pap and has never seen it anywhere else. Their biltong and droë wors are also very good for taking along the travels in Kruger.

We use cardboard apple boxes for all grocery items. They're sturdy, have another box which fits over as a lid and fit well into our little trailer. We use a thermo-electric cooler for all our cold items.

Stampajane, a very good idea :D apple boxes with lids, then as soon as the box is empty we can put it in the recycling bin instead of lugging an empty crate around with us till we get home, thank you, off to Fruit and Veg City later on today

We have a collapsible plastic crate into which go all the "essentials" like wine, whisky, soda etc. and it is in the back of our vehicle, so that space in the caravan is available for non-essentials like veg and fruit
Meat is in the caravan freezer and milk etc in the fridge..........we pack these the day before leaving and leave the fridge and freezer runnung on electricity overnight - this way, we have cold and frozen food when we get to whichever camp that we're staying at 4 - 8 hours later.
