Hi All cricket fans. I think that De Villiers should, as suggested by some of the commentators, burn his gloves and stay in the field. He is a brilliant fielder but falls short in wicket keeping ability. De Kock should be given the opportunity as he is at the same stage that Boucher was when he joined the team.

Some other changes which could be looked at is bring Philander into the team and drop Tsotsobe because he, Tsotsobe, is not a consistent bowler , is slow in the field and has no batting prowess. There are other batsmen to be looked at as well'

Another point that worries me is injuries. The guys get through playing IPL but when playing for Proteas they breakdown. Are they not doing their physicals before games commence. AND players are OK for IPL but not for their country?

Just a few thoughts.

Graham, what about Vilas. He and de Kock are both worthy and there is wk cover.

Vilas is a good call - he can perhaps slot in instead of Ingram/Miller for the unofficial tests, as Miller and Ingram's first class stats are average (I cannot see them being test greats, although they could both have great T20 and ODI futures).

Kuhn is another decent keeper batsman of course. The squad will have 15 players I think.

My ODI team for Sri Lanka

Amla
de Kock
Faf
de Villiers
Duminy
Miller
McLaren/Peterson (depending on conditions)
Morris
Philander
Steyn
Morkel

Duminy can be a 6th bowler. We bat deep with this team and have bounce, pace, swing, aggression and control in various combinations with the quicks. On the bench I would have Lopsy (been no.1 ODI bowler recently), Peterson/McLaren (depending on which is selected), Ingram, Davids and Abbott. Rossouw and van Zyl are knocking on the squad door too!

What has happened to Marchant de Lange? He burst onto the scene then disappeared. If he is injured get him back soon!

And Graeme Smith? Past it for T20, but still a lot to offer in 50 overs.
And in low scoring games (if you can predict them), Kallis.
Both are a must in tests.

Is Albie the forgotten man. His bowling travels, and he can't play spin, (not that many Proteas can), but on a seamers wicket he hits better than anyone.

I agree with Philander for Lopsy. When Lopsy is on song, he is good, but at his pace there is little margin for error.

G500 is that your Limited overs team? If the test team then you have to make place for Smith and Kallis as BB mentioned.

BB Marchant was injured and is well on the way to a full recovery. He recently played in a provincial game.

Good.

A rash thought. Schalk Burger should quit rugby for good and get back into cricket. He is a very good batsman, and could well make it provincially, and thereafter, who knows.

Oh yes, I forgot about Bafana. SA's worst under achievers.

As a large African nation, why do we struggle to find decent players. We have a lot of showmen, but for years we have not been able to find the net enough. Sean Bartlett and Benni have been the only decent strikers for 20 years!

Yes it is my 50 over team. I agree regarding Smith - he had limpet qualities when others are crumbling. De Lange is quite expensive but has phenomenal wicket taking potential...

Last night we heard the end of the story but it sounded like the inappropriate grabber is not getting any further discipline, is this true?

Correct.

Now if it had been Bakkies in NZ?
Or Suarez.
Or Cantona??? he would STILL be suspended and he stopped playing 15 years ago!

Can not believe that. He should have been suspended, it was such a planned action. :rtm:

Agree with you on under achievers.

We have got the best sports facilities on the African continent yet soccer is going nowhere. While on my way from Jan Smuts airport, I listened to Johan Rossouw, RSG radio's soccer commentator who was asked about the state of soccer in South Africa. He mentioned that pre 1994, players played their hearts out just to make the team. Administrator did the job for the love of it and not for the money. With all sports becoming professional, the people are there for the money. Johan mentioned how coaches worked with a team, not aiming for immediate success, but to build a good team for the future. So what happened, after the first few losses, they fire the coach and a new one has to build up a new team. He mentioned further the there were also political interference as far as team selection is concerned. The people in charge of soccer is there for the money and if you are not politically well connected, you will not last long.

This interview with Johan was broadcasted on SABC radio channel, Radio Sonder Grense, on Saturday 22/6/2013 at about 15h00. Perhaps it is available on podcast.

It is not the coaches Rooies. We have had some of the very best.
Philippe Troussier
Carlos Queiros
Carlos Alberto
Stuart Baxter
and Gordon Ingesund,
all who have succeeded elsewhere.

I believe it is the mentality and 'discipline' of the players, and of course the administration that has self serving motives and interferes.

But there is also interference in rugby (read Jake White's book Black and White) and cricket to a letter extent.
