Me and SO normally eat breakfast at Malelane before we enter KNP. During this specific visit we decided to take some samies, coffee etc. and have brunch on our way in from Malelane gate in the park to have more time available to get to Satara where we stayed our first night.

At about 09:00, just before the S114 turn-off, we decided to eat and I parked on the shoulder of the tar road in the shade of an overhanging tree with ample space for other vehicles to move past.

All the vehicles from behind slowed down to see if we were at a sighting or not and move on when they see that we are busy eating. At one point a Corsa bakkie passed us and stopped at the turn off as if deciding to turn into the S114 or not. The next moment the guy behind the wheel reversed and stopped next to us.

He started the conversation in all earnest with "I am a tourist, you know" and then followed it with "you know that you are not suppose to eat in your vehicle. You can only eat in camps or picnic spots like Afsaal. You should read the rules before you enter the park!!". SO who will normally answer you in a jiffy, just starred in my direction in disbelief and did not say a word  . With no reply he gave us the look and left before we could come to our senses.

Although we had a laugh afterwards, we actually respect the guy for wanting to apply the "rules" of the park.

Oh I love it!!!

Agree the chap must be congratulated for taking the rules so earnestly, but this story is just so funny!

I must say, I was really upset with this guy, until SO explained to me that he was actually very serious about people not abiding by the rules, and he didn't mean to upset anybody. He thought he was just doing his duty. :|

On a trip to Berg-en-Dal, we stopped at the office to book in. A big orange Ford 250 arrived with oom Kaspaas, tannie Koekie, klein Piet and Stompie. Apparently, it was their first trip because all the men were armed with knives, axes and pangas. While oom Kaspaas went to reception, klein Piet and Stompie, dressed in full khaki clothes, stood guard at the Ford. We were later told that they didn't want to run the risk of being attacked in camp by a pride of hungry lions.

I am deadly serious hilda. It happened during 1986, shortly after Berg-en-Dal was opened (1984)The family sheepishly looked around and saw that everybody else were wearing casual clothes and sandals and were only armed with cameras with big lenses. The names I have given them were not their real names, but one could see that they were farmers from somewhere in the middle of nowhere, with very little knowledge of what was going on in Kruger. They looked like members of a political movement, which I can't mention here. Perhaps it was the nature of politics in SA in those days that made them dress up like that.

Excellent postings Rooies and Barryels.

My sister and family were staying over in Satara once when their next door neighbor, a Chinese gentleman walked over with a bottle of wine and a wine opener (the butterfly winged type) and asked my brother in law if he knows how to use the opener. Brother in law opened the wine and pointed to the Made in China stamp on the opener. The gentleman laughed a lot and showed everyone in his group back at the bungalow the Made in China stamp.
Lots of laughter followed over there and friends for life were made. Smiles and thumbs ups were exchanged every time they bumped into each other at the shop, restaurant, waterhole and everywhere else.

An old one of mine I have posted before on the forums; but I always have such a laugh when I look at the pic. Taken in Letaba in 2004:

Good story Bennievis  Another comical story (or was it most embarrassing story?) was when we camped at Berg-en-Dal during December 1999. A storm approached the camp so we tied our tent to the bakkie for fear that the near gale force wind would blow it away. The next morning we were in a hurry to get out of the gate early and forget about the rope and the tent. We pulled away with the tent in tow and the next thing we saw tables, chairs, camping beds and other stuff flying through the air.
