There are many remarkable people, known or not so well known, who have over the years contributed in many ways towards nature conservation in SA. But if you have to commend one person for this who would it be? (It may even be your grandfather for teaching you about the Kruger animals :D). I have to mention Oom Paul Kruger for his foresight and the role that he played in the establishment of the iconic Kruger that we know today  .

I am not as familiar with conservationists in South Africa so I hope you will forgive me mentioning some incredible people who operate in Zimbabwe. Dr Greg Rasmussen and Peter Blinston and their amazing staff and loyal supporters have shown such commitment, selfless dedication and vision over many years in their efforts to save Painted Dogs in Zimbabwe and elsewhere. When people talk about conservation initiatives, education and the benefit of conservation to local communities they could look no further than the Painted Dog project at Hwange NP for their model and inspiration.

Naming only one is impossible for me.

I may mention the following (not necessarily in order of importance):

Pres. SJP Kruger.
Col. James Stevenson Hamilton.
Col. Jan Andries Brand Sandenbergh.
Mr. A Brynard.
Dr. U de V. Pienaar.
Dr. S.C.J. Joubert.
Dr. Ian Player.
Dr. Bernabe de la Bat.
Prof. Fritz Eloff.
Dr. Bernard Grzimek.
Dr. Richard Leaky.
Ranger Qumbu Magqubu Ntombela.
Sergeant Helfas Nkuna.
Sergeant Nombolo Mdluli.
Sergeant Njinja Ndlovu.
Sergeant Jafuta Shitlave.
Sergeant Jan Hatlane.
Sergeant Judas Ndlovu.
Dr. Anton Rupert.
Mr. Piet Grobler.
Genl. J C Smuts.
Mr. Joep le Riche.

I may still add few more later.

We have had great conservationists, without a doubt.

The two who have had the greatest impact, in my mind, have been James Stevenson Hamilton and Dr Ian Player.

Without JSH we would have no Kruger, without Dr Ian Player, we would possibly have had no Rhinos.

All of the above people are acknowledged for their contributions in the field of nature conservation by many. From another perspective, but to me equally important are the authors and writers on environmental issues. To mention just one author whose books made an impression on me is Jane Carruthers. She was one of South Africa’s first environmental historians and has published widely on this topic. One of her books is The Kruger National Park: A Social and Political History. I also think the people who introduced us to the Kruger and other nature conservation areas made a contribution in the sense that they planted a seed and perhaps it is small but I think important. I also think a person’s parents, family and friends play a role in how a person, from childhood years, views nature conservation.

May I mention Dr Anton Rupert. He was the co-founder of the WWF (World Wildlife Fund) He also took a lead in the creation of the trans-frontier parks. An amount of R1.2m was donated initially in order to establish the first TFCA's.

Grant, indeed.

Jane Carruthers has given a wonderful historical insight. She is a fearless historian and researcher. I am a great admirer of her skills and intellect. Sadly her books do not always have popular appeal, but I do think that they will remain timeless.
