I would like to know how English speaking folks pronounce 'Lugmag dam' ? The 'g' is pronounced the same as when you try to clear your mouth before you spit.

One I've always wondered about is a bird - cisticola. I've always pronounced it sis-tea-cola, but I've heard it pronounced sis-tick-ola....who knows which is correct?

Even I had a few moments.................not thinking that some of those were Afrikaans, I took them as English names...............and I'm Afrikaans!!!!

Interesting topic and a lot of views on how to pronounce. No one have taggled Paul Kruger yet or do we all say KNP.

For me if a name is Afrikaans it stays like that and vice versa. Paul is not Pall and Kruger is "Kru - er".

There is also a lot of dispute about my maiden name, Gerber. The Americans, South-Africans and Germans each have there own way to pronounce it. Strange how your own culture change a name. In this case the Germans must be correct, but I am not changing it.

Some other towns that I hate the translations of are Grahamstown to Graam-stad, Pietermaritzburg to Petermaritzburg, George to Ge-org.

Incorrect pronunciations is very common even between South-Africans. A funny one is Onderbroek spruit in Natal - I think the English meant under brook, but maybe I am wrong and the name is really reverring to underpants.

Back to Kru-er I was always talking about Bee-ya-ma-tee, until I realised there is no a, but its Bee-ya-mi-ti.

Glad to help with the Afrikaans, but will stay-away from the others and eat my poi-kee kos.

LQ, be very careful. Some of the names in KTP are scottish, like Craig Lockhart, Monro and Dalkieth. If you call Scots English, they don't like it a LOT, and will come looking for you....

any plein, is pronounces plane, like Gemsbokplein, the only tough bit there is the ggggggg.
any draai, is dry.
Any Rooi (red) roy will do.
Most "u" as a single vowel in a syllable, 'I' will usually do. Like Rooiputs, Roy pits.

My mistake was with Moravet.................really did not think it was Afrikaans...........

I'm happy to put up with any pronunciation of Afrikaans, as long as people don't laugh at some of my English pronunciations!!!!!

Long ago it took me a long time to find Bergvliet it CT after an Englishman got hold of it........

Some pronunciations I've heard of:

Nkuhlu is pronounced Mi-Kush-Lu (with the I in 'mi' sounding the same as the I in the English word Fir, only much shorter)

Byamiti = Be-ya-meet (but with the 'ee' in 'meet' pronounced short)

Tschokwane = Tchokwan (with the 'a' pronounced the same way as the 'a' in the English 'Far'. So maybe it's more like Tchokwaan)

Malelane = Ma-li-laan (The first 'a' is the same as the a in 'Far'. The 'i' is pronounced the same as the i in 'Fir'. The second 'a' is pronounced like the one in 'Far'

The 'ane' in Tchokwane and Malelane are pronounced the same way

Pretoriuskop = The empahsis is placed on the 'O'.

Phalaborwa = Ph is pronounced as P.

This is at least how I've learned to pronounce them, so maybe others pronounce them differently? Especialy Nkuhlu!

Also: Phabeni = Pam-bain, with the a in Pam pronounce like the a in Farm, only shorter. The AI is pronounced like the ai in Fair.

Thanks so much BB Although those are the ones that i'm pretty okay with anyway, i'm thinking more along the lines of...

"Samevloeiing" - I usually call it 'the waterhole where the two rivers meet'.

"Urikaruus"- I've heard this pronounced a variety of ways (even among CT's forumites)

"Kij Kij"

"Cubitje Quap" - I do make an effort with this one, but I fail.

"Leeuwdril" Just way too many vowels in a row... I can pronounce "Leeu" just fine, as it's the only word you ever hear from other motorists in Kruger "WAAR IS DIE LEEUWS?" or something like that...

Come on Moose -- surely you could have picked the really hard ones like Criag Lockhart, Dalkeith, or even
Sitzas

Let's start with the easiest : Leeuwdril lee -- oo (as in hoop) -- drill

Kij Kij -- probably not correct, but good enough for an Anglicised version -- kay kay

And maybe I should quit while I'm ahead and give someone else a turn
