I am sure there must be more peaple who visit the parks/ visit the forum who have many unanswered questions. Thought this thread would give us the chance to have them answered!
I have always wondered that if an injured / sick animal was found in the park, would veterinary help be given - or would it be dependent on the vulnurability of the species involved? ( say black rhino).
And say there was seen to be a disease present among a species is action taken or is it the policy to allow nature to take it's course?
Thankyou - I am sure someone knows the answers.[

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that SANParks is following a policy that ONLY human caused injuries or problems will be intervened with.

Even with rare species, the ordinaty cycle of nature if followed, without human intervention. The course nature follows is harsh and only the strong ones will survive..... See under the aminal thread, where a young cheetah (named skinny) is being followed in a similar question.

Nice post, Kathian

Thanks G@sp.

My question:

where does all the waste go?

If I look at the amount of people in the Park, day in and day out, how does Sanparks deal with all the outflow?

re waste - I know Kruger has an active recycle management system in place.

Never thought about that MM. Presume you mean  human waste, not human 'rubbish'.
(Ecojunkie- how would a recycling system be employed ? By the way I've just found your 'Visitor' thread... truly amazing!!!)

The system is based at Skukuza and they sort the rubbish for recycling - will try to find out more. I was surprised when I first heard about it too.

Given that a sick animal may be given a swift end to its plight by a ranger...if one comes across such an animal whilst in the park what would the correct procedure be ?
Also if one came across a crazy driver or stupid behavior, if the number plate was reported would the information be acted upon? :naughty:

As HRs we are told to report the animal to the nearest ranger and wait until they come so we can point out where the animal is.

An alternative would be to use either the emergency number or the duty number of the nearest camp (on your entrance permit which should always be in your car) giving as much detail as possible. Difficult if no reception where the animal is. Just note as much about the area etc as possible to pass on when you can call.

Well ..I would call the Kruger Park emergency number. I know its not meant for reporting sick animals but I'm sure they would inform the vets or rangers or maybe give out the correct number to call. If I were near a camp I would report it there.

The emergency number is 013 735 4328

Are wild dogs subject to the diseases which affect domestic dogs?

Wild dogs are definitely affected by rabies and many packs have been tragically lost to this awful disease. :(
