Hi Henk, a kelkiewyn is a sand grouse (don't know which sub-specie).

The name comes from their call - in Afrikaans it sounds something like kelkiewyn (You do need a good imagination).

It's the Namaqua sandgrouse. I think their call sounds (rather fittingly?) like "coq au vin" :wink: One of the very few birds I can ID by call 8)

Who knows what "Troupant" means. (Lilac-breasted roller)

This really is a "gem" of an Afrikaans name! 8)

Another fascinating one, although probably not PC, is "Hottentotsgot" (Praying Mantis)! :shock:

I'm not sure of the etymology of this one! :?

Just saw one in the garden, Jan Frederik (Cape Robin). Wonder where the Afrikaans name came from?

The name comes from the call that it makes; a quick "janfrederik"
