Like mossie for sparrow, and witogie for white-eye.

Hmmmmm... never heard of them being called witogie . The Afrikaans name has always been " glasogie " - meaning Glass eye . :naughty:

A lot of 'Engelse' here call them 'witogies'.

We won't say anything about the "souties" or what the full name is :roll:

A few Afrikaans animal names that I can think of:

A Bokkie – For example an Impala lamb or a small Duiker or a Springbokkie (buck) but then a buck in South Africa could also mean money (Rands) and bokkie could also mean a kind hearted but adventurous Ouk

Vuurvliegies – Insects

Paddavissies – Tadpoles

Vuurvliegies are fireflies.
Vuur = fire
Vliegies = flies (little ones).

Does anyone know the modern name for a zebra?
