How descriptive Afrikaans can be. Beautiful names for those goggas. Now to find a way to drop them into a conversation. :hmz:

I also heard praying mantis being called bid-sprinkane - almost direct translation. Except that they are not sprinkane (grasshoppers). :D

Oogpister.

This is a ground beetle in the informal Afrikaans spoken language. They may be seen during outdoor activities such as camping and when it is spotted someone will alert the others by saying - take care there is an Oogpister.

Parktown Prawn

Is this an animal or a derogatory term ?? I remember it used a long time ago and at the time I thought it was an animal, but maybe I 'heard' wrong.

Spookvoel = Grey headed bush shrike.
I have heard people talk about ghost birds as well. It's due to the eerie sound they make and they like to hide away in the bush so you hear them but not see them.

I grew up in KZN in an Afrikaans house with a English father and a mother fluent in Zulu. I married a boere-girl from Dispatch and raised my kids English  I dream in Afrikaans........I think!
I scanned through the last 17 pages of this topic and have made a list of the bird names that have already been given so as not to repeat them. Here are the first few additional ones shown as the Afrikaans name with a direct translation and then the real English name.

Aasvoel - Bait bird or Carrion bird - Vulture
Breekoparend - Broad Head Eagle - Martial Eagle
Grootjagarend - Big Hunt Eagle - African Hawk Eagle
Kleinjagarend - Small Hunt Eagle - Ayres's Hawk Eagle
Roofarend - Robbery Eagle or Raid Eagle - Tawny Eagle
Witkruisarend - White Cross Eagle - Verreaux's Eagle
Baardmannetjie - Bearded Little Man - Scaly-Feathered Finch

I'll post more of these soon. Perhaps some of the souties want to translate one of my favourite Afrikaans words: Bloubessievormkoekie
