Days like Monday's holiday are a welcome break.

Exotic flora should be eradicated from as much of our land as possible and more especially from all of our nature reserves. I have noticed that in some reserves you do find exotics around the reception areas and staff quarters. This, IMHO, is not correct. Indigenous is the right way.

Treehouses are a great way to get up close and personal with the power of cellulose.

Great weekend I had. The kids really spoiled me and the Mrs bought me a new Kindle.

Potjies should be correctly layered with meats and veggies so that the food is consistently and tenderly cooked.

Cooked meat on a braai are the main causes of food posioning. So remember when cooking any kind of meat on a braai, such as poultry (chicken or turkey), pork, steak, burgers or sausages, make sure:

•the coals are glowing red with a powdery grey surface before you start cooking, as this means that they're hot enough
•frozen meat is properly thawed before you cook it
•you turn the meat regularly and move it around the braai to cook it evenly
Remember that meat is safe to eat only when:

•it is piping hot in the centre
•there is no pink meat visible
•any juices are clear

Clear icy blue skies are typical of a Gauteng day in winter

Winter is always the precursor to Spring's magical reawakening of new growth.

New growth on my face doesn't take long after my occasional partial shave.
