Hi all,

I know that most topics are about photography, but this time a question about video

We visit Kruger twice each year and most of the time my wife and I take a lot of pics, but because I cannot make a choice between video and photography I also take my videocamera with me. This year, for the first time, also my brandnew GoPro Adventure. Put it on the bonnet of the car and used my cellphone as remotecontrol. During our 4 weeks trip trough Kruger I counted 4 other Gopro-users.
I do like to know their experiences with GoPro. Pro's and con's and.... maybe a new item on the Public sightings????

Ruud :cam:

Hi Ruud,

Not entirely sure what a GoPro is? Could you perhaps give a brief over view for those of us who are new to the technology and perhaps share some of your footage?

Hi Ruud,

Have a look at Roanerics postings under Kruger accommodation. She made a lot of GoPro clips of the various camps and gates.

Driving through Balule

Maybe ask her how she experienced it???

Hi Saraf,
a GoPro is a very small action video/photocam. Many times used on motorbikes or with skydiving or surfing and tha kinds of things. We put the videocam on our bonnet but you can put it really everywhere with a suctionmount or om a monopot or on a helmet and so on.

I will try to get some footage on the forum, but it's also new for me so.... :hmz: ...... but I'll be back on the forum.....

Hey Ruud!

My SO, Skillie love using his Go-Pro! We've used it many trips and have so many video clips we don't know were to start sort and edit. We want to put a video together with all the animals crossing the road in front of us, but now we're thinking what about all the animals crossing behind us ... now thinking of getting another one!

The only problem we have is the battery life, to change the battery while out on a drive is not possible if the Go-Pro in mounted on the bonnet. The Wi-Fi drains the power more quickly, but cannot go without it.

Hi Super Mongoose!

you're right, we aways start at 6 AM and put the GoPro on the bonnet with only WiFi on. And it ofcourse depends on howlong you are really taking videoshots but most of the time we could make it till around 1PM before the battery was empty. But we do have a second batterie. So at a birdhide or picknickspot you can replace the batterie. I've heard that there is a new type GoPro with a batterie with a longer life....!?

But it's really big fun 8)

Ruud

Hey Ruud!

I believe it's the Go-Pro Black edition that has the longer battery life and improved Wi-Fi, also includes a lot of new stuff, but that is still on our wish list.

We have four of five batteries and a battery lasts around 2 to 3 hours.... with the Wi-fi on, only two hours, I think soon it's time for an upgrade.

We have stunning clips of driving "Die Hel" and Baviaanskloof and lions in the Kruger, so next it is learning how to edit all theses clips into something nice...

Our next trip is coming up soon and the Go-Pro is packed!

Hubby, Rooivalk, received a GoPro for his birthday today, so we are also now going to be driving around with an action camera on our bonnet - IF we can get hold of an attachment to get it on the bonnet (all sold out here...).
Which attachment do you use to mount it on the front of the car? Suction cup? Or the other clasp thingamajig around the wiper?

Hey Rooivalk, we use the stick-on helmet attachment, leave it there and just slide the go-pro case in and out.

What I found on our last trip is that the waterproof case fogs up in bad weather, so we end up using the case the ventilation holes all the time and light rain did not damage the go-pro. We did take it off when it rained hard.

BUT the go-pro shakes around in the case a tiny bit and ends up recording a horrible noise, the video quality was just fine. I think next time I will put a small piece of padding in the case underneath the go-pro.

Thanks for the info, Supermongoose.

We managed to find a suction cup attachment that should do the trick. (Can't stick on as we will be in a rental car).

Can't wait to start experimenting in Kruger. Nine days to go!

Great to hear that the GO Pro has proved successful, looking to get a cheapie video camera for our trip in August. Would the folk in the know reccommend one of these over a video camera?
