I have read trip reports with great photos of birds in flight. On this thread we can post our photos of flying birds.

I will start off...This photo was taken on the S125 during our July 2009 visit to Kruger:

I knew that I'd written something on the forum a couple of years ago on how to photograph flying birds. I found it again, you can find the topic here.

Where did you take these shots from, inside a car or hides? I presume they were very close at 420mm? My problem is that BIF is always too far - even at 600mm. This leads too a lot of cropping resulting in serious loss of IQ.

These shots were made from a variety of locations:

Yellow-Billed Kite
This photo was made standing next to the car in Moremi using a 500mm lens. Vultures and kites were circling over an old cheetah kill and I positioned the car in such a way that they were flying straight at me/ I used the door as a tripod.

Open-Billed Stork
This photo was made handheld in Chobe at Ihaha camp site. I used a 500mm lens and a 1.4x converter. Every day thousands of storks would congregate near the river and getting shots like these was relatively easy.

African Skimmer
This photo was made handheld in the Okavango Delta while sitting in a mokoro. I used a 500mm lens. The skimmers had a nest near to where this image was made and they circled around the nest site. I got lots of good shots of these skimmers as they circeled around us.

Gannets
Both gannet photos were made from the hide at Bird Island in Lamberts Bay. I used a 500mm lens, tripod, Arca Swiss B1 ballhead and a Wimberly Sidekick. At Bird Island there are thousands of gannets and they fly right next to the hide. Even with a 200mm lens it's possible to get decent pictures there.

Thanks madach , the high speed feature is a great way to capture moving images, tried it on a sunbird once and was very impressed buy what one could capture by the way great pics there
