Why not just make a meal of it Louis Dreyer?

Craddle your lens in a disused wine basket
and trip down to the Cape visiting all National
Parks on the way down! Hah, take your baby to
Groote Schuur, ...................................................
................................................

Oops no!. Dangerous place for
displaying photo equipment.

At this point I'm ok, covering a range 55-200,
with dubious equipment. Filling the gap from
200-500 is where the problem lies!!, with more
dubious equipment??? With so much said.

It would seem logical to fill that gap with a zoom
lens ranging from say below 200, - till 500, with
any make.

Yet it seems, in competition to itself, a lens ranging
from 55 - 500mm is a better choise than a lens,
170 -500, or well whatever!

For now I know what to look for and yes I realize
that all is financially related;- better something than
nothing at the waterhole.

Thanks to all who had input of any kind on this thread;-

Thanks a lot guys for your input, it is valuable!!!

Dubious Equipment?-I doubt it HE. As someone once said about cars-There are no bad cars-there are only cars that are better than others. Same with your equipment. I try to remember "It''s an illusion that photos are made with the camera-they are made with the eye, heart and the head". Thus spoke Henri Cartier-Bresson. Makes photography so much more enjoyable when you look at it like that.
Okie is right-enjoy :cam:

H-E ... sent you a Pvt message some time ago ... offer still stands.... If you have not bought or borrowed a longer lens, I have a ... either way, PM me
"Take nothing but memories, leave nothing but footprints"

Photographs help to crystallize memories, but cannot be seen to be a replacement of them!

So H.E... what happened? Did you find yourself a lens? (Which one?)

I'm looking at the Sigma 150 - 500mm myself.

regards

Not yet Bennie. A long story. I sent Scottm private messages
but all fell just flat there. However found a lot of equipment on
Bid or buy and seeming, some bargains, which somehow also
slipped through my fingers. Sigmas and Nikon stuff.

Purchased a Nikon 135mm, a slow lens the optics slightly
scratched, but heck for 160.00 bucks it was worth the trial run.

Also purchased a lightmeter, which one will require when using
older lenses but never received it. Bucks down the drain...

Lately not a single lens, Sigma or Nikon available and it infuriates
me to think some bargains slipped through my fingers to to error
on my behalf.

I have been schleppin' from pawn shop to pawn shop and all is there
Canon , Tamron Asahi you name it all but alas............So......

H.E
I am assuming you live in South Africa so I don't fully understand all of your ways.
In the UK photographic clubs often have internal 'Shops' selling members redundant/surplus items at reasonable prices.
This may be another option for you if its the same in SA.
Buying second hand is always a bit of a risk.
Most of my equipment including bodies (D200 & D3) and lenses from 10mm to 500mm are second hand but purchased from a reputable sourse. I would never buy either bodies or lenses without seeing them first.
Good luck

Hah, JD best comment, as a reply, I can make
would be, "If it is a resolution we are seeking then
best not try understand our ways",.

However thanks for showing interest!!!

H.e, Sorry to see you had some bad luck, apart for making the right choices, one needs to know when to buy, to know this is the "one" Sometimes you lose out and other times you buy in a hurry, ah the comfort of retrospect. We all know the feeling when you have just bought something and find a better product at a better price down the street.
I hope you have reported, or at least given the person on bidorbuy a bad rating.

Happy hunting, I do not have that luxury where I am at the moment.
