 Post subject: The Florence Bloom Bird Sanctuary and Delta Park - Gauteng

Hey has anyone been to this bird Sanctuary? if so is it worth a visit? Thinking of going tomorrow and taking some photo's of the creatures with wings :) PM if you interested in coming along.

Massimo, I grew up within a kilometre from Florence Bloom and I still live that close. It is a great place. I'm sorry I saw your post now only, else I might have joined you.

Did you end up going? What did you think?

If you go again, I might be able to suggest some routes for you.

I have seen some interesting birds there.

I heard from a few people that it is not very safe to go there so i tried my luck at modderfontein nature reserve and they dont let people in unless they going to the SPA :wall: :wall: :wall: its a nature reserve so i landed up building myself a tripod :)

I don't think its not safe. There is private security which patrol regularly in the park. It is well used by dog walkers, off-road cyclists and joggers. There's also a very popular children's playground near the hides (not near enough to disturb the birds). As long as you go at a reasonable time I doubt you'd have any trouble. I don't feel threatened when I go.

If you like, try get in contact with Geoff Lockwood. He lives close to the sanctuary and will give you more info. As far as I know, he does an atlassing walk around the park a few times a week on his own, without incident.

ok thanks for the heads up... was wondering is it possible to post some of the pictures that you have taken there? also how are the hides? are they well kept and is there much birdlife around ?

The hides are reasonable. A little bit of litter maybe but not bad.

I don't think I've taken pictures there before, I generally go just to look.

Edit: The hides might be a bit far away for taking pictures
