You can always UPGRADE to Canon once you get some experience  :D

Mikef,

If I upgrade now it will probably be the Nikon D3x ( Ya I wish )

Willie De Beer

The D3x is not a bad camera - but it is still a Nikon  - a true UPGRADE would have to be to Canon

In all seriousness the D90 is a fantastic camera (some misinformed individuals from the dark side might even consider it better than a Canon  ) and I hope it provides with many great :cam:

Did you guys feel the same as I do when you got your first DSLR camera??

Hi Willie,

Yes, I felt like a kid again when I finally could afford my D90, 18 - 105mm and 70 - 300mm!

I suspect you may get a bit bored with your 55 - 200mm, I would swop it for a 70 - 300mm lens if you could, but that's just me.

Ever since I've really built up my kit quite nicely around my D90 - I'm sure you'll enjoy yours as well!

Willie,

Well, you've got the 55 - 200mm now, I wouldn't get the 70 - 300mm if I were you, I would save up for th Sigma 150 - 500mm Lens. I picked mine up on another forum for R8k! It is not a prime lens by any means, but the results I get with this lens for the price I paid is astonishing! If you follow my trip report from last year, you'll see 90% of my photos were taken with the Sigma and I think the results was quite ok.

Enjoy your camera, it really is a excellent piece of equipment!!

My third post in about 3 years, not sure if I'm doing this right ...

I am looking to buy a Nikon D3100. I am a beginner photographer who goes to KNP quite often. The camera comes with the 18-55mm lens. As second lens, should I rather choose the 55-300 mm VR or the 70-300mm ? Or possibly a totally different one ? I rather spend more money and have something that I will be happy with for 3-4 years then buy something cheap that I get bored with after one year.

Any advice please ?

Hi NicoleCT,
Well I've got two 70-300, the old model and the new one and find this lens excellent if you're looking for a all round lens. Pretty compact, not too heavy and with a decent reach at 300 mm and can find it at a decent price.
I'd got for it as a beginner and then take into consideration something with a little more reach further on.

Hi

Thank you for info. You are already hinting at something with more reach further on. Sounds like I might get bored with it quickly. Maybe I should think of immediately investing more money now to buy something with more reach ?

Is the Sigma 150-400 (or was it 500) what you are hinting at with more reach ? Maybe I should rather immediately invest more money (probably twice the price?) on the Sigma 150-500 instead of Nikkon 70-300 ? The camera/lens will be used to take pics from the car only, for birds and animals. I have a Nikkon "aim&shoot" which takes decent pics when walking out and about.

Hi Nicole,
Going straight for something with more reach really depends on the use you're going to make of it.
The Sigma 150-500 is a super lens, at the moment it's going at about € 775 in Europe, but it's heavy and difficult to use as an all round hand held lens. Most of the time you'll have to use it with either a tripod, monopod or beanbag.
The Nikon 70-300 apart from being cheaper, € 455 here, is also compact and not heavy at all.

If you're going to be in the parks often then go straight for the Sigma and you'll be happy with it.
