Unread postby PARDUS1029 » Wed Jan 12, 2011 8:52 pm

Hi to all.

I am thinking of buying my first DSLR cam and want to find out want you guys think of the following camera.

The Nikon D90 or D500.

Which one do you think is the one to buy for wildlife photography!!

I like the D90 more than the D500?

I had a Panasonic Lumix.

The D90 is an excellent camera. This would be a good start for you.. you will however see in time that lenses are actually more important than the bodies.. they are afterall the "eyes" to your images..

Hi Pardus,

I bought a D90 last year for my trip in Kruger and loved it...

most of the pictures were taken with the D90 and 70-300mm 4.5 VR Nikon lens though some were taken with a D3000.

Feel free to have a look at our trip report, I found the D90 a great tool and at a good price, though the lens is most important they are very expensive for us to buy for a few weeks a year.

Hi Pardus, I'm another D90 lover and of my three Nikon's (D50, D80, D90) I find it the absolute best.
Prices have gone down of late and certainly worth buying one.

Here one of my latest pictures

Rumuruti, excellent photos!

A choice between the nikon D90 and the D500, I would go with the nikon  . I think the build quality is better than the canon D range. But otherwise I would suggest pentax. have a look at something like the K7 which would have gone down in price now. Pentax K7 link

Pentax makes excellent cameras, ( I have my eye on the K5) only problem is the lenses and like rumuruti, john and poppy and robbie said that's the most important part. so only drawback for pentax is the choice of lenses, they do have excellent 300mm and 200mm primes and a 60-250mm F4 but nothing longer in the digital range, although sigma has some nice quality lenses (150-500) that are also an option.

It's a no brainer... NIKON D90!!

The ONLY reason I could ever see why not to buy one, is if you've got enough money to buy the Nikon D7000... Eish, I'm making my own mouth water now...

But seriously, I've been using my D90 now for almost two years and what a pleasure these two years have been from taken many weddings to mammals in KTP. Have a look at my TR to see some results with a D90 and using mostly a Sigma 150 - 500m lens.

When you go buy your D90, do go on the FREE Nikon course you get with it, they teach you all the ins and outs of your camera - no need for a manual after that course.

Enjoy! :cam:

My perennial advice is, buy a 2nd hand body first. You'll lay out less money, see if its for you and learn more about what you want to achieve. Anyway, the glass (lens) is more important than the body.
I'd try find a 2nd hand Nikon D70/50/80/200 and play with one of those first. You can pick some of those up for less than R2 500 these days! (And you can generally resell soon after and buy something newer).

A few months ago I bought a used D70s because my D40X can't autofocus with a lot of long lenses and I haven't looked back since.

Oh boy.... Over to the dark side without good advice yet.... ;)

Why not look at a few Canons, Pentaxes or Minoltas first???
Now keep in mind that you will be wanting a wide-angle lens, something like a 28-105 and something that will zoom to at least 400 millimeter. Those 3 lenses are going to be expensive, so you want to buy them only once.

Have a very good look at lenses and what you want, then have a look at which brand goes with it.

This is basically the final step for me. I am awhile busy with choosing a DSLR. For me the Nikon is a more beautiful cam. My hole family( except my brother) have Canons. Nut for some or other reason I like the Nikon more!!

It a choice between a D90 and a D5000.
