I'm presently moving from film to digital in preparation for my KNP visit in 2006. I have a few more elements to add, but here's what I've aquired so far:

Still camera
Canon 350D (called Rebel XT in the USA)
Canon EOS EF 18-15mm f 3.5-5.6
Canon EOS EF 75-300mm f 4-5.6 USM III

Videocam
Canon ZR300 22x optical zoom

Media
2 SanDisk 1G CF cards
3 Sony mini DV tapes

bits and pieces
3 Canon NB-2LH batteries
(both DSLR and video use the same battery)
1 Canon battery charger

Still to come will be some sort of storage for still pix, looking right now at a Vosonic X-drive VP6230. No US retailer seems to carry Vosonic products, but they're available from US online sites. Looks a far better option than the CoolWalker. Plus a simple point and shoot camera for wide shots, so I can keep the 75-300mm on the 350D and not have to worry about changing lenses.

Also will need more videotapes, car battery charger or better yet, one that can be used on mains or car (multicharger that works for a variety of batteries prefered if I can find one) and that is multivoltage (which I so far can't find in the US). Ditto for a power outlet strip, since I know KNP chalets don't have more than one or two outlets, but again, multivoltage power strips don't appear to exist in the USA. Can anyone recommend a good electronics shop in Cape Town??

Mucho thanks to all those forum members whose input has helped me to make these selections. I used both cameras last weekend at a wildlife reserve in Texas and am really pleased with them both !! It was great to have a chance for a pre-KNP "test run" with (moderately) wild animals :D Saw lots of sable, some cheetah, and a black rhino :tongue: Plus plenty more usual game.

Ok, I already got quite a few Cameras :wink: .

I have started with a

Canon AE 1
I bought that one as a used Camera around 1988.

Lenses: Canon Zoom Lens FD 75-200 mm/ 1:4,5
Canon Zoom Lens FD 35-70 mm /1: 3,5-4,5
Canon Lens FD 28 mm/ 1:2.8
Canon Lens FD 50 mm/ 1:1,4 S.S.C.
Canon Speedlite 155A

Still got that one and still love it very much , as it was my first SLR Camera.
But travelling to Namibia and starting with Wildlife photography made me think that the Camera was not the right Camera anymore.

So I bought ( after our Namibia holiday November 2002) a :

Minolta Dynax 5

Lenses: Minolta AF Zoom A 28-80 mm / 3,5-5,6 D
Minolta AF Zoom A 75-300 MM / 4,5-5,6 D
( I just sold that one a couple of months ago)

Quite shortly after that I had a :

Nikon F 80 , a very nice and well build Camera.

Lenses: Nikon AF Nikkor 28-80 mm/ 1:3,3-5,6 G
Nikon Af Nikkor 70-300 mm/ 1: 4-5,6 G

After discovering that I just did use toooooo many films :cam: I switched ( very recent) to the :

Nikon D 70 DSLR which is quite similar to the F80.

I use it with the same lenses as the F80.I still travel with the F 80 because I just do not feel very confortable while travelling with just one camera ( and at the moment I cannot afford a second DSLR Body :( ).(One of my AE 1 bodies just broke down on a perfect day on 90 mile Beach in New Zealand :evil: :doh: ).
I am still surprised about the results I got with the new DSLR.
I have got two 2 GB Compact Flash Cards and use a Vosonic
X-drive Pro 3310 80 GB ,as backup during my travels.
I am using a Vanguard VT-432 Tripod and just made a Beanbag for Kruger….
Moreover I always carry my Steiner Safari Binoculars 10x 26.
The last two Cameras are the ones I travel with.I already used them during our holidays in Namibia , Botswana and Zimbabwe November 2004 and in South Africa May 2005.
You can see the results on my flickr page ( the pics of May 2005 will come shortly, Addo already arrived,also see forum sightings and Public Picture Gallery)

I hope this will be of use .
So enjoy wildlife and Photography. :wink:

Updating my kit:
As I said before I am now owning a:
Nikon D70s (my so is now using the D70)with a
AF -S DX Zoom Nikkor 18-70 mm f/ 3,5- 4,5 G IF ED.
My SO is using the Nikon D 70.
Still using the Nikon Af Nikkor 70-300 mm/ 1: 4-5,6 G
And finally my new Sigma DG 5.0-6.3 / 170-500 mm Nikon AF arrived during our holidays in Kruger, so now I am just waiting for the right occasion to test the new '' toy''. :wink:

Before I start, can anyone advise on second-hand equipment in SA? Living in the UK for now I pick up loads of stuff but as I do all my phography back home & there seems a greater love & interest in SA, it amazes me that there doesn't seem to be the same 2nd hand infrastructure/market!?

I use:

Pentax MZ50
Pentax MZ60
Cable release
Small Pentax flash
Larger non-Pentax-dedicated flash
2x ball-head window/table clamps
Manfrotto tripod
Small extendable tripod
Polarizing filter
UV filter
2x Converter
Sigma 100-300mm Lens
Sigma Macro
Hotshoe adapter (on-camera)
Hotshoe adapter (off-camera)
Pentax 3m off-camera flash cable (connecting hotshoe adapters)

In the pipeline:

Sigma 50-500mm lens
Camo' tarp for use as a hide

At the request of bert........

Had nothing but Pentax in the past..... still have them lying around somewhere, plus lenses of all sorts of discriptions to fit them. BUT

Last year updated to and now only use:

Canon EOS 300D
Canon EFS 18 - 55 mm lense
Canon 28 - 135 mm IS lense (dont like it much) (the lense that is)
Canon 75 - 300 mm IS lense (Love it)

UV filters on all lenses

2 batteries - (dont want to be caught with a flat battery so make sure I always have a spare FULL battery with me)
Battery charger - that came with the camera

1 GB Lexar Compact Flash card (came with the camera)
1 512 MB Agfa Compact Flash card -bought in case I needed it and just in case....... have not used it yet.)

A funny khaki camera bag, which fits in everything just fine and suits me. (Not lowepro - )

No bean bag
A tripod that I think is somewhere in the cupboard, but have not seen it for ages, so maybe it was stolen too!!

Travel with my laptop so download pics every night.

Looked into buying a separate flash, but it was just too expensive at that time, and as I dont take many indoor pics thought it could wait, and then along came Loamsies wedding and I needed it BADLY.

Want to buy a converter, just not sure which one though..... having read up on them, think its more affordable to me then a bigger lense......

Advice on converters please......

Is that it bert?

A few minutes ago I was informed by Nico what "posted your camera kit"means.So here it is:

Two Canon EOS 300D bodies;
Both the camera's have UV-filters:
Both the camera's have a vertical grip, each having 2 battery packs;
Canon EFS 18-55 mm lense;
Canon EF 70-300 US-IS lense;
Canon EF 100-400 mm IS lense; (which is my buddy!!!)
Canon Extension Tube EF12II (macro);
Canon Remote Control;
Canon Angle Finder;
3 CF Card, Apacer Steno Pro II, 256 mb each;
Acer Laptop;
light tripod;
Special car tripod (scandinavia) in two pieces, that works great when you work with the L-lenses;

Doesn't look much, but I tell you, that my back is very painfull as I arrive in SA.
Does anyone has a good tip, how to take so much handluggage WITHOUT having trouble at the airports?
Greetings, Yvonne

My cameras

-Canon Eos 300D
-Canon Eos 50
Lens:

-Canon EF 28-105
-Canon EF 75-300 USM
Circular polarizer filter
Beanbag: Rice bag bought on arrival, let on departure!

My way of thinking: To enjoy my trips, not carrying too many and heavy things
I don't have a lot of technique knowledge, I just use my feeling and natural lights.

How do you like, by the way, the 300D? And the EOS 50 is analog, so you use both "the systems" next to eachother?

Well, I began to make photos few years ago with a traditional camera, I have bought the digital one last year, so I have to learn how to photography on a different way.
The only differences are maybe in the result when you want to print a pic in large size. The “argentique' (don't know English word!) definition is better.
And also I'm often cutting animals legs with the digital. Just need a little bit more of practice!

I use 2 cameras because I don't like to change of lens all the time, it's not good when you are in dusty places, and when you are hurry to shot you don't have the time to change.
Then I use the Eos 50 for landscape pics, large views with the 28-105 lens and the Eos 300D with the 105-300 lens as now with the conversion I have a 480. I'm very happy with that.
For the storage: I have four 256MB cards and one 512. Every evening I sort out and delete the “bad pics".

Hi All,

I purchased my photography gear just before I went away in December and I found it suited my needs perfectly . Hope this helps with future choices to all.

Canon 350 D

Canon battery grip + Extra canon battery

Canon 70-200 f4 L

Canon 300 f4 L IS

Canon 1.4x Converter

2x Uv filters

Lowepro Computrekker Camera bag

Bean bag filled with polystyrene pellets(therefore not beanbag:)

2x 1GB Transcend compact flash card

Laptop

Card reader

compact digital camera (for wide angles and its lighter)

Also alot of patience and luck.

Most of the time stuck to the 300 + 1.4x 0r just the 300 in bad light.

Most of the time the combination of 300+1.4x is was a bit short especially for birds and also in thick bush and grass you want to get as close as you can .

Things to buy or look at getting is the Ergorest car tripod/support with Manfrotto ball head with quick release and a wireless shutter release :)

Will post pics if i can .
