Hi Timbo,

I found a app that can tell you how many actuation are on a few models like the 30D , 40D and 50D (I had the 30D and 40D) , as well as a separate app for the 350D. not sure about the rest. if you take it to cameratek they can tell you exactly how many shots you have taken on any model. i just recently sold a 20D which i had for a year. the guy that bought it off me took it to cameratek and they told him the shutter count was 200 000!!!! on a 20D. well done.

Yeah the expected life expectancy of a shutter is generally the minimum number of actuation's a shutter should take but there are many with more then that.

brogan, could you send me the links to that app?

Hi Forumites

At long last I could afford one of the lenses I always wanted for my Canon: a Sigma 120-400mm f4.5 - 5.6 APO DG OS/HSM. (no prizes for guessing what I did yesterday afternoon :D :D :D)

Question: should I keep my Sigma 70-300 f4-5.6 DG OS? Will I still use it in the veld? :hmz: :hmz: :hmz:

Do you need the money that selling the lens would give you?
Is there much resale value in the lens?
A 70-300 lens is a very adaptable lens and you should still find it usefull if you keep it.

Congrats!
Also, you need to know how to get them on the plane without paying for an extra seat

Hi Morkel
On our last trip I used the 300mm with the 1.4 and 1.7 converter plus the 70-200mm lens for the vast majority of the time with the 50mm for close up work.
You are right about getting them on the plane. When we travel long haul we use Premier Economy which gives extra baggage entitlement, both in the cabin and hold and means that you arrive relaxed and ready to enjoy your holiday.
I didn't take the 400 this trip as I find it difficult to use from the inside of a vehicle as it is both large and heavy. I use the 400 for rugby and aircraft (civilian and military) where I need more reach.
A selection of my images are on Flickr - I am John Walton (51) - some are better than others!!
I have just registered for some evening classes over the next few months to improve my skills in readiness for our next trip to SA in September/October.
Regards
JDW

Ughh reading thru some of the kit in this thread makes me feel rather insignificant :) and a bit jealousy as well   ;)

I've got:

Canon 7D
Canon 18 - 135 F3.6
Canon 100 -400 USM
Canon 50 F1.8 (for the night shots etc)
Canon 430 EXII Flash
Battery pack

And a whole list of filters and flash equipment tripod monopod etc :)

still trying to take good enough pics to justify some serious equipment. Until I learn the whole camera it wont be upgrade time :)
