Similar to non-AF-S/USM lenses, sometimes the focussing noise can irritate animals. Not as much as celphones ringing though... :x

Meg,
Dear o dear
Not yr celphone going of

Hehe, no, not mine... it is one thing that annoys me though when in the Skukuza area in particular. You stop at a fantastic lion sighting and next thing a phone in some other car starts playing Jingle Bells or some such nonsense :x

I know that when u go hiking or walking in the Park that motorised cams aren't recommended.

Animals react to it in a very wary way. They either like the elephant Madach spoke about become aggresive or they flee.
It is diffcult enough to get close to animals whilst on foot and those cameras just make it more difficult.

there was this story I read where an animal attacked when it heard the noise of a cam. The trails ranger had to react quickly. I'll try and find the story and post it here.

This is so true, and just one more argument for hanging onto our old manual focus camera's 8)

I'll be interested to hear your story WTM. We have found that especially ellie mothers with really small calves get very upset by the sound. I wonder if it's just the unknown, or if the sound has a similar pitch to some threat in the bush.
