From here we headed down the Link Road for the last time and once down in the valley sighting livened up somewhat. We were very pleased to bump into mommy Meercat and her little ones

She kept a careful watch in case of an aerial bombardment that would threaten her little ones

She also took time to pose in her beautiful garden

The Ubejane Loop was closed at the dam so we had to turn around. There were a few water birds knocking around on the waters edge

Two nice Kudu Bulls also came down to drink

We headed back to camp with no doubt in our mind that we had had a lovely stay at MZNP. It had been extremely hot but that was to be expected. The plentiful rains had ensured that there was plentiful grazing which meant that the inhabitants of this park would thrive for the next couple of months. Just before reaching home - some more little ones!

There is no doubt that one of the attractions to this park must be the magnificent scenery with its ever-changing moods. It is thus prudent that I post a few pics taken which are in fact the actual memories that you take home after a visit to this park. Some of these pics were taken on a previous visit during the winter.

We took our time packing up this morning and did a thorough job of cleaning etc because the next time our tents would be used will mbe in April. We managed be get done before it got too hot and set sail mfor home - we decided to prolong our stay slightly by exiting via the Ubejane Loop.

The dam full of water is a pleasant sight

Water always attracts the birds and here we were forunate to see Spoonbills and Cattle Egrets

This Kudu cow seemed very skittish and bolted the minute she saw us

The small creatures came out to bid us farewell just before leaving the park - Ground Squirrels and mother Meercat seened sad to see us go! The Squirrels have lovely umbrellas with whic to shade themselves from the sun

We checked out and cast one longing glance back in the direction of Salpetersberg before pointing the Landy in the direction of Grahamstown.

Well that's it for the time being. I trust you enjoyed the ride. I look forward to reporting on our first visit to Tankwa Karoo NP and Namaqua NP (coast) which we will be doing in April.

Hi canon,

Thanks for a great report!!

I am also from Grahamstown, and was at Mountain Zebra a few days before you...stayed over on 22 and 23 December...
We had a lot of rain on the 23rd, and all roads were closed as the rivers came down, so we were stuck in camp that afternoon...
Perhaps i must have a go at a Trip Report....

Can you maybe give us some more info on the 4x4 Trails... is low range required, are there bushes at could scratch your car?? how much ground clearance is needed...
I have just got a new Rav4 all wheel drive, was tempted to try a trail, but was nervous to damage a brand new vehicle

Hi Bublet

You must have a go at a trip report - would love to read it.

There is no danger of scratching your new vehicle on any of the 4x4 routes. None of them are very challenging but all of them have steep sections that would most likely require low range. You would most likely manage the Juriesdam route - the only steep section being from the turn-off up the side of the mountain. Sonnensrust would be very manageable for most of the way except for a few steep and rough sections when climbing up to the plateau, in fact the same can be said about the Umgeni trail. Give Juriesdam a bash when you next visit (not if it is wet though).
